Vodacom taking on Neotel?

All that thing is, is a cellphone that you can't carry around. Pfffffft

They must be comparing them based on the Wireless phone..it cant be on price, as far as I see it, its just the Wireless attribute that "ties" these two together
 
What a joke.

Not only is it almost 4 times the price of Neotel, why on earth do they force a contract on you for the "privilege" of data? Why not make that prepaid too?
 
Errrm Vodacoms converged solutions have been on track for a while now... they taking on Neotel and Telkom.
 
1/4 the data and only R10 cheaper? :D
The sweet spot for me is 5GB for R300 per month (all inclusive) and I'm going to hold out for an Internet connection at home until that price point is reached.

Seriously now ... 500MB is a joke but I guess this wasn't intended to be a proper data offering.

Very nicely said DXL, why would they wanna give their money away, and the funny thing is that these high interconnection fees were introduced just as Cell C was joining the market. Cell C has been pushing for these fees to be lowered since they start almost 5 years ago.

NEOTEL is making a difference in the market 4 competition reasons. The poor coverage is letting them down.

If Jacob Zuma can change laws of the Country 4 his own benefit, surely i think he can lower interconnect rates 4 all to benefit.

The important thing for these companies are to under supply. Monopolies can't benefit otherwise..

the distinction will increasingly fade - from a licensing point of view there is no difference at all between a fixed and mobile provider

I agree that the bundled data is a bit of a disappointment. BUT, Neotel's Neoconnect is painfully slow in my experience and keeps disconnecting. If Vodacom can offer 3G speeds and stable connections for great coverage, then it is a comparable service.

Um Vodacom has been using this for years... you'll c street vendors using it. Data is EDGE only, sigh hence its only 500mb. Y cant Vodacom place Evolved Edge nationwide. Its mre energy efficient on devices than 3G, provides wider coverage than 3G, its fast as 3G & its cheaper to deploy.

Or they can just use the 900mhz frequency and deploy HSDPA coverage as wide as GSM coverage...
Its expensive.

WTF, since when extend of the coverage justify price difference of R1.92 per unit (in context of ZAR 8c vs 200c)??

IIRC, Vodacom launched a 'fixed line alternative' in 1994. As did MTN. And was so successful that around 10 times more people use it today than fixed line offerings.

So this is nothing but another device/package combination to address a specific market segment.

For example, I sit at my desk up to 18 hours per day and prefer a speaker phone. Yet everyone calls me on my mobile and I make most of my calls from the desk phone. So now I have one of these phones on my desk with a TWIN-SIM. While I'm in the office, I can make mobile calls using a phone better suited to the environment. When I go out, I use my mobile phone.

A number of other scenarios come to mind where this works better than a mobile phone / data card type setup. But if it's not for you, rather select another offering that works better in your own setup.
 
This offering is not competing with neotel/telkom. it is competing with mobile phones. Hopefully, the reception and quality with be better due to the large antenna. I can't wait for the day when a call costs the same no matter what network or device you are using.

It's like saying that the new BMW 5-series is a direct competitor to the Cheri QQ car ... gotta love "competition" :P
