Vodafone Huawei E220 USB Modem - first impressions

I found it, you go to Vodacom's website and u can download new firmware from there.

It's possible if Vodacom has upgraded its HSDPA in your area from 1.8Mbits/s to 3.6Mbits/s, are you somewhere close to Vodaworld?

No, I got these speeds near Windmere Center in Durban.

I'm currently connected at 3.6 Mb/s in CT near the Baxter Theater.

Well, it could still be just normal HSPDA. 200 kByte/sec = 1.6 Mbit/sec

As a general rule I have found that you can't use the 8 bits = 1 Byte when dealing with async comms due to stop/start control info. For this reason I have found a rule of thumb (I know there are exceptions) that a factor of 10 should be used. For example diginet 64k will give you 6KB/s, 56kb/s modem will be 5 kB/s and ADSL 512kb/s runs at around 51KB/s.

This assumes no compression etc.

Is it possible to share a connection via the USB HSDPA modem accross a network?

You can probably only change contents of the fake CD when you do a firmware upgrade.

Can't you download the appropriate version from Huawei's site directly?
I see there's one called E220 HOSTB105D01SP01C03 (Normal) and one called E220 CD1HOST46V100R001B104D01SP00C19 (Vodacom).

I've only used the MTN one, I have just checked now and the ISO image of the fake CD is embedded in the firmware upgrade EXE. So, by modifying the EXE it would be possible to have anything you like appear on the fake CD.

Just checked again and I think the upgrade EXE you get from Huawei is too small to contain the actual firmware for the E220 and the ISO image of the fake CD, so all it is doing is copying the ISO image of the host software to an area of the E220 flash memory in a process very similar to a firmware upgrade.

Huawei probably won't make the E220 firmware available to the public, like they have done with the E620.

Gingg. Do you know where I can find this software?
E220 CD1HOST46V100R001B104D01SP00C19 (Vodacom).

Unfortunately Huawei seemed to have pulled all the different operator downloads from their web site around the time that Vista was released.
You could try the Vista update for the E220 available on Vodacom's web site, here.

I have tried both version 7 & 9.

7 does not detect the driver/modem & 9 is verrryyyy sloooowwww.
As you said by using the normal software from Huawei works fine.

Thanks.

Wow, I don't have time to go through all these pages, but I'm sure the answer is in there so maybe someone could point me to the post?

I understand the E220 is plug and play and treated as a flash (creates a seperate drive) and contains the software. But then what is the CD you get with it for?

call up tech support and got it working in minutes..
needed to setup a new dial up connection.. and modem init sequence..
and it works...

later discovered another dialup connection left behind by the earlier telco installation software.. that also works.... this has has no username and password... now wonder if all that (username, password, modem init seq) is needed at all.... probably not......
good then when using another PC just need to clicko on the old dialup connection...

Found this thread through Google...

Just wonderin... Im thinking of getting this modem, is it possible to remove the sim and use it in a pda/smartphone. I know its for data use and thats all i want. I spend a good bit of time out n about n it'd be handy to be able to use my pda to get emails n check the net n then be able to use it again on my laptop ltr....

1st question is right

2nd... If the sim is in the phone can i use the phone to check emails, surf net etc. Basically, does the sim work as a normal sim but only giving data functions(no talk etc)

What does the Acronym AFAIK stand for? By the way, i remember him posting something like that too. Cant remember where or what it was though.
