Yup, what they said. R45k for the license. Doing the skid pad training was cool though. Seriously needed in these conditions.

When I drive long distance on ice roads it's VERY common for your car to suddenly slide and if you freak out you end in a ditch. Touching your brakes is a big no no. Also, it's a weird feeling when there are ice ruts and your wheels go into them, the car then steers itself and there's not much you can do about it.


Anyway, been a bit quiet in this thread. I went back to SA for a visit and couldn't handle the heat. But, I doubt I'll be complaining about heat anytime soon. This was the temp this morning. Coldest I've ever experienced was -16, so I might just hit that if I drive through some valleys this weekend. My colleauges were in -33,5 and heading towards Karasjok which was sitting on -42.

Most Euro countries do...just not with SA.

Even NZ can swap out their licences here in Norway, but it cost me R45k to redo mine from scratch. I can use my SA license as a tourist, but only for 2 months as a resident.

I swapped mine without any problem in the UK, and if I wanted to could now swap it for any other EU licence if I moved.

How'd you do that by the way? I've received the forms but I apparently have to be a resident before I can apply, with residency being > 185 days in the country. I've only been here (the UK) since November.

You would have to wait (or tell a white lie, I doubt they check) and fill out the forms and send them off.

You can exchange your driving licence up to 5 years after becoming resident in the UK so long as your licence remains valid. The fee is £43.

You can no longer drive in the UK with an old South African book of life-style licence or letter of entitlement to one, and you can’t exchange these for a UK licence. You must have a new credit-card style licence or a letter of entitlement to one.

Swap a credit-card style licence for a Great Britain issued licence
Order form D1 from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Send the form, fee and any documents you need to (including your driving licence) to the address on the form.
You should get your new licence within 3 weeks.

Just to add, the actual guidelines just say you need to be normally resident in the UK which is defined as living in the UK for at least 185 days a year, it doesn't say you have to have been here for 185 days (a small distinction with a big difference in meaning). If you intend to be normally resident in Britain I see no reason why you can't apply. It would only depend on your immigration status (I can't help on that as I was already a citizen when I did it).

To be normally resident you must usually live in the United Kingdom for 185 days in each calendar year. Applicants who are not UK citizens or nationals of another EU or EEA country will not be considered normally resident if they:
• do not have leave to remain in the UK, or
• are in the country on a temporary basis without leave to remain either while awaiting a decision to stay in the UK or following a decision refusing such an application.

Just a quick update. It's still cold, but should be clearing soon and it looks like we might see the sun from early next week. Averaging about -10 each day.

In the meantime we've had some aurora activity here and I took a timelapse from my bedroom window on Tuesday night.

I'm not very happy with the timelapse on my Canon S120 which only works on 30s intervals, so I'm going to try find something else that works better while still being able to capture the lights at night.

I'd definitely look at investing in a GoPro if I were you, that part of the world is amazing and would do one justice.

I've got a Hero4 Black. I've tried to use it for timelapse but something didn't work right. I know it's capable because it works real well for night diving.

I also have a Canon 60D, but I need to sit down and get my act together.
