Neat, I have the same gear in my bag (the GoPro and Canon 60D).

I'd definitely recommend using the GoPro for it, it's super easy and the results are amazing. Here's a link to GoPro's official tutorial, and another good GoPro link for night specifically.

So last week we had a bit of a cold spell and it hit the lowest temperature I've ever experienced. -22°C

I had to go work up on one of the stations again that had quite a view, despite taking an hour to drive up with a huge trackbelt machine. Also finally saw the sun for the first time since November from up there. It should be back in my town sometime during this week...

And then a few hours later the snow rolled in, so this pic was taken from the same spot, with the same background "view".

One good thing about all the snow is that the local ski slope opened again and I could take my snowboard out for a run.

It's also open during week days from 6-9pm at around R500 per day, which seems expensive and IS expensive I guess, but it's the price of 3 beers so that kinda puts it into perspective.

Nett, 35% of my gross goes to taxes. :/

I worked a ton of overtime last year (which is taxed at 50%) but even after tax I was able to save like a mofo. When I'm not out commissioning installs etc then obviously my base salary is lower but I'm able to put away 60-70% because I have very little overheads. With the car and insurance that's taking a beating now...the 70% figure was while I was using the work vehicle.

Things here are craaaazy expensive, but everyone earns a living wage. Techies and overalls aren't looked down upon. Just going to the hairdresser for a 30min "men's cut" costs R800, which is considered cheap. So you don't get riiich people, and no real poor people, but no slums and no mansions.

It's surprising what you can achieve when you don't pay medical aid, school fees, varsity loans or insurance on theft and where electricity is cheap etc.

Yeah, I've noticed how spending patterns are just different. Many folks have said they have more discretionary funds available at the end of the month than when they lived here, even though some things are super expensive.

How do you save, though? Investments, savings accounts?

Yip. Almost half my salary goes towards rent (eina fk)...but the rest...don't really have any other expenses aside from food & internet.

Yeah man I tried explaining this to people over here. So many people spend tons on all sorts. Like they'd buy only the best brands and highest quality items and it would cost a fortune in SA, but x2.5 in Norway.

They don't really save like we do. They tell me if you work for you money you should be able to enjoy it. They don't really save "when-the-poo-strikes-the-fan" money like we do in SA.

If you lose your job here or get injured and cant work anymore the gov pays you 60% of your salary until you're better or until they find you a new job. Medical care is free. Dental care isn't (I've already paid around R25k for crowns etc.) but you get free dental care up to the age of 18, so there aren't neglected teeth as much as in SA.

So yeah, if you have no money you're still covered by the state. Also if you're a chick and you get pregnant you get massive grants. There's even a chick in my town who is 23 and has 4 kids. No job. Doesn't need one. It's insane.

A completely different mindset, hey...

Difficult to kick the 'oh-schit-I-must-save' mentality, though. Don't think it's a bad thing, though. Setting yourself up financially, without denying yourself anything, is still prudent and wise, I reckon.

Yeah man I STILL have that mentality. It's like I feel guilty for spending money. I was raised by conservative afrikaans parents. My dad always believed you shouldn't buy anything if you could build it yourself...and I dunno. I always feel like "but what if my job fires me tomorrow for bein useless", Gotta keep reminding myself I'm here on merit and that I've being doing fine and brought in more than my fair share of turnover for the company.

And yet I still refuse to pay R1000 for a pair of tekkies or R400 entry fee at the local club. (That happened on my birthday nogal. 200NOK entry fee during christmas. Jirre seun, I might be dumb but I'm not retarded.)

Yet perversely, Norway as a country has the biggest sovereign savings fund in the world.

That's just abusing the system which is BS. They should give you less money for more kids.
