Does anyone know if it's stipulated when their free calls to certain countries will expire? >Found some info in TOS

Also I'd like to know, approximately how much bandwidth does VoipRaiser use? and can you adjust sound quality with their software? (this has significant impact on bandwidth usage I'm sure)

http://www.voipraider.com/en/TermsOfUse.html
"Registered users get max 300 minutes per week of free calls, measured over the last 7 days and per unique IP address"

So do you trhink that would be messed up by having a randomly assigned IP like with Telkom?

Thanks.

I have used it a bit. Call quality is ok but can be bad sometimes and I wasn't able to figure out what it was.

I had better call quality to Australia during the one phone call than I did sometimes phoninh local numbers.

You get 90 free days per purchase and you have to buy $10 minimum I believe.

They don't have anything saying when the countries will be removed from the free list, but they could probably do this at anytime without notice or warning.

Not sure about the other things. I would suggest you try it and see if it works for you. It's only about R80-R90 a shot. From what I've heard though, you shouldn't be expecting to get any support if you have issues...as I've heard people saying that their support is non-existant.

I doubt that SA will be on the list of free countries for more than a few more weeks. They must be losing money by offering this service. Most of the other Betamax services charge between 3 and 4 Euro cents per minute to SA landlines which probably reflects the real cost of such calls.

I haven't used Voipraider in particular but I find that the voice quality of other Betamax services is much better if you use their website to connect the call between two landlines rather than from an ADSL connection. This option doesn't use any bandwidth and only costs slightly more - in the case of Voipraider there is only an additional 5 Euro cent connection charge per call (not per minute). If SA is removed from the list of free countries this will no longer be the case as you will then need to pay the per minute rate for the SA leg. Apparently many of the cheap/free rates do not apply to calls that are made from SIP devices or different soft phones etc. in the case of Voipraider although some of the other Betamax services do allow the use of SIP devices.

I have been using Voipstunt for more than two years and have been very happy with the service. Normally the service is used to make close on 20 hours of free international calls per month as well as some paid calls and I've very rarely had any problems. I don't think that the 20 hours of free calls uses more than 1GB of bandwidth - probably less.

The quality of calls to international destinations is usually much better than between two SA landlines as I think that all calls are routed through Europe. Voipraider is offering a 1 hour free trial so test it out first to see if it meets your requirements. The random IP address doesn't seem to have any affect on the free minutes or days etc. You may even be able to use it to your advantage ;-).

Take a look here for some feedback about using Voipraider to make free calls from Spain to SA (near the bottom of the page).

Apparently the free calls only apply for 90 days after each time you buy credit, and then you are limited to 300 free minutes per week.

Still not bad about R0.30 to landlines and R1 to mobiles in SA.

It's one of the cheapest for calls to SA from what I've seen (correct me if I'm wrong).

Where do you find that info on the connection charge?

Does that mean any call I make will be charged that connection charge?

The 5 Euro cent connection charge is *only* for calls that are routed between two landlines. This fee is not charged if you are making calls via a broadband connection. Most of the Betamax services charge this connection fee. See this link if you are still unsure.

Voipraider and 12Voip probably offer the best value of the Betamax services at the moment (free SA calls, free international SMSs), however, some of the other services may also be of interest. www.nonoh.net offers calls to SA cell phones for 6 Euro cent per minute. I don't think this service levies the 5 Euro cent connection fee on phone to phone calls either. www.voipbusterpro.com offers 365 free days for 10 Euros but levies a connection charge on *all* calls of 3.9 Euro cents. They also only load 5 Euros of credit into your account. If you don't make regular international phone calls this service might work out cheaper.

Several of the other services provide 120 free days rather than 90 for 10 Euro and although the calling rates may be higher with fewer free countries, the rates tend to stay fixed. Take a look at this table to help you decide on the most appropriate service.

Test out the 1 hour free Voipraider offer to see whether it suits your needs. Try to make some local SA calls to judge the quality between two landlines as well as from an ADSL connection using the Voipraider soft phone.

im using voipraider...after making about 130 min of free calls ( i have 50+free days left ) it began to say : your trial is over - please buy credit.....
left it for a week and its working free again....
using a 512 ADSL line and its crystal clear

cheapest rate to SA (besides free calls ) is lowratevoip at 1.5 euro cents...good call quality

What are the fees when making a call from Telkom to a Voipraider number. Are the costs from Telkom to any 087 number the same ?

You cannot call into a voipraider account from Telkom, only from another voipraider account.

@SlowInternet: On closer inspection it seems that the cost to call 087 numbers from a Telkom phone varies depending on the provider and the time of day. The minimum charge is 65c and then you need to multiply the per second charge by 60 to get the per minute rate i.e. calls to an MWeb 087 number cost just over R1 per minute during standard time while only 51c to Cybersmart numbers etc.

You would need to first link a local 087 number to your Voipraider account. From the VR FAQ ...

Can I link a DID number to my Voipraider account?
Yes you can, if you use a DID-number supplier you have to forward your DID to: [email protected]
See here for more details.

You can purchase a local 087 number from www.telfree.co.za (R29/month), www.switchtel.co.za (R49/month), www.bopcall.com (???) etc.

Tried to register with different address options on voipraider.com
