I am running a wifi mesh network using a set of 4 TP-Link Deco S7 units.

What is the best way to use a VPN on the network, install a VPN on the main router unit or use VPN on each device individually?

What are the pros and cons of each option?

I cannot install a VPN on my TV (Samsung QN90CA QLED), hence leaning to the first option but it comes at a cost. I will have to upgrade the main Deco S7 unit to at least a Deco X20 or X50, because apparently the S7 does not have the cpu/ram resources to install a VPN on it.

The second option can also be costly because then each device that needs a VPN will have to get a license (if not free VPN).

Anybody with experience of VPN on these Deco mesh units?

It is best to have the VPN on your main router where possible
Experience may vary however when it comes to streaming especially.
I have had sucess using a VPN on Netflix, but Amazon video gives me the finger and does not want to work (atleast wih my AdGuard VPN)

Pros:

  • Single Setup for All Devices: Once the VPN is set up on the main router, all connected devices, including your Samsung TV, will automatically route through the VPN.
  • Improved Privacy and Security Across the Network: This setup ensures that all traffic on your network is encrypted, which is ideal for devices that don’t natively support VPNs, like your TV.
  • Reduced Device-Specific VPN Costs: Only one VPN subscription is required, as it covers all devices on the network.
Cons:

  • Router Upgrade Cost: The Deco S7 does not support a VPN due to hardware limitations, so you’ll need to invest in a model like the Deco X20 or X50.
  • Potential Speed Reductions: VPNs can reduce internet speeds, and placing a VPN at the router level might impact overall network performance. The more devices connected, the more likely it is you’ll notice speed drops, depending on the VPN server quality and load.
  • Limited Configurability: Some router-based VPN setups have fewer customization options, like choosing which devices bypass the VPN if needed.
