VW Golf 7

Would all the people saying the Golf 7 looks too much like the Golf 6 please draw us a detailed picture of what it should look like.

Thought so..

The 7 is built on a completely new platform that saves weight by using lighter materials and is cheaper to manufacture as it's faster to produce and more standardised across the different models in the VAG family.

So its cheaply made ok

Nope. The problem goes back to Golf 5, which was very expensive and labour-intensive to produce. Golf 6 was thus introduced as an interim measure, with Golf 7 rounding out an exercise in improved production efficiency. Efficient ≠ cheap.

The simple reality is that the Golf has been the absolute benchmark family hatch for generations, and Golf 7 will likely continue that trend.

Its not my job, its their engineers/designers' job to wow us. VW is notorious for having lazy engineers/designers - look how long the Citi maintained the same shape and image. Every year all they did was put on different lights and wheels and call it a new model!

Facetiousness aside, keep in mind that the CITI was a uniquely South African anomaly. Yes, VWSA milked the bejesus out of it, but ultimately only because the local car-buying public allowed them to. If a business has the opportunity to make millions without any substantial investment they'd be daft not to take it.

Anyone in this thread who implies that the new Golf is a **** car is undoubtedly just a hater.
Absolutely. I just wish they'd stop introducing a new range like they're changing their underwear. It's ridiculous to think that in the 90s, the MkIII was produced between 1992-1999. And now we're up to MkVII already. In 14 years, they've introduced 4 new models. Some might call that progress, but it doesn't do your resale value any good whenever a new model is released.

This was exasperated by the costs of producing the Golf 5, as I alluded to above, but we live in a consumerist world and people want shiny things.

You know what annoys me? The trend of making every new generation of everything just that bit bigger. I appreciate products being improved, but why must they always also be inflated? If not for this, as an example, would the 1 series BMW even exist? It was only needed because the 3 became as big as an older 5 series & it left a gap in the market. I don't get it...

Lol! Where do you come up with this cr@p?

Problem with the golf is that its sooo boring. Every one has one. What are you saying about your self if you buy one? "Im just going to follow the heard and do what every one else does, then hopefully Ill fit in better." For that reason alone I wouldn't ever get it.

You misspelt 'Corolla'.

Or that VW does not like that Koreans are eating into their market, desperate times.

I don't get what you're getting at? VW were quite upfront with the Golf 5's issues regarding its production costs... And an i30 still isn't a Golf; it's good, but not that good. ;)

If the issue was cost then the 6 shouldn't have been as pricey as it ended up being towards its end of life. This shouldn't have been called a 7 IMO, the numbers are growing too quickly and people get the wrong idea. It should have been a 6 facelift.

Agreed about cars getting bigger, it's super irritating. The 1-series coupé is as big as an E30 3-series. I suppose it's based on feedback that people want more room and gadgets etc., but a new car should be built to accommodate that - they shouldn't ruin the existing cars.

Production cost doesn't necessarily translate to sticker price. And as for naming conventions... it's a minefield; how many BMWs' model designation still reflect their engine size? Not many at all...

That being said, the Golf 6 was much more a facelift of the 5 than what this is of the 6.

What also surprises me is the 135i Coupe weighs as much at the 335i Sedan. Sedan being 10kg heavier. Perception is always that 135i is much lighter than 335i.
