Volkswagen South Africa has issued a statement that it is to recall certain Polo models.

According to the carmaker the recall involves 96kW 1.9 TDI derivative produced between January 2005 and May 2008.

Though VW said it will attempt contacting the 4 836 affected owners, the carmaker urged owners to contact their nearest dealership.

The recall was issued due to problems around the reliability of the TDI engine’s turbo charger.

An inspection may necessitate the replacement of the turbo charger. This will be covered by the manufacturers’ warranty.

Hey, well that's me. It's the 3 door Sportline model. But the turbo problem is a long-known issue. I thought it had been addressed? Oh well fsck it...new turbo for me - that's great. Maybe they can throw in a free service for the inconvenience. :D

Nope...me neither. You had any problems with your turbo? Mine's been solid although I do know a guy who's blown his turbo. He did a long drive (6 hours), arrived and his destination and cut the motor right after gunning it. When he started the car on the Monday morning he reckons it was making a strange noise and then it died on him on his way to work. After much aguing, he did get a free improved replacement. They wanted to charge him 30 grand. :eek:

no only got 27000km on the clock, 3 years old in May. still goes like a bomb, so hopefully it wont blow up.
one wonders how bad the problem will have to be before they replace it after an inspection, seems they may as well do it anyway, because should it blow up in the future they'd have to replace it anyway...seeming there was a known issue.
 
Software update

i own a 2008 96kw polo and i am really cheesed about it, i read a while ago about the software update that they will do to the new tdi's. the software basically prevents your turbo from over-spinning in 1st and 2nd gear, which means less boost that equals to less power :(

i spoke to vw and the guy said only certain models turbo's will be replaced (i don't know exactly what the criteria is for a turbo to be replaced), the rest will get the software upgrade. He also said to me that the kw will drop and that s*cks.

How can you sell a 96kw car but we forgot to tell you that actually we will detune it for you to produce only 85kw....nice one!!!

Still love my car though :)

Oh fsck that then! They conveniently forgot to mention this in the article. Anyway, I want to know what they're doing to my car before they touch it. And ya, I love mine too! :)
 
is there anybody on this forum that works for VW and can give us a low down on the turbo issues and the replacement conditions? and whether the reduction in power is true. because surely you cant reduce the performance of somebodys car without clearly stating it before hand?
also..anybody else have wheel allignment/car pulling to one side issues?
 
Funny thing is, I was reading the new issue of CAR magazine this weekend (April) and they featured a road test on the new [-]Dacia[/-] Renualt Sandero. In the competitors section they had the Corsa D 1.4 Essentia (entry level) and also the Polo 1.4 - their choice was the Corsa since it offered more for the money and on the Polo they said it was a good looking alternative (I think not) with high levels of "perceived" (yeah right - perception) quality but they get a lot of letter about Polo problems each month (I love reading those).

Interesting thing is gonna be the June issue where the used car guide will feature the Polo. They really gave the Jetta Mk4 some serious flack when it was featured in the used car section :p Much more than the Corsa/Utility C got or even the Accent.

And that from a magazine that loves VWs so much it could have been called JK8 CAR magazine :D
 
Really the Corsa offered more in their opinion?

You see i do love Opel but i just can't afford them anymore. I feel they are pricing themselves out of the market. The new Opel Corsa for instance is just ridiculously priced. I love the new look but don't think it warrants the price as the engine isn't wonderful. Not many options either. You can either have a 1.3 or a 1.4. That dissapoints me!
 
I remember when the pre-facelifted BMW E46 320d (100kw / 280 Nm) was blowing turbos left, right and centre.

The facelifted E46 320d (110kw / 330 Nm) had a different turbo and seemed to work fine in the SA climate.

Must be a similar thing, although I am surprised it has taken VW THIS long to order a recall.
