VW recalls Polo

ok, had my Polo in for a service, it too needs a turbo replacement under the warranty. waiting to hear from the dealer when the part arrives. will follow up once it's been replaced.

Wife had her 2005 TDi's turbo replaced with 69000KM on the clock. No problems up to the replacement.

I've driven it afterward and to be honest, I can't feel any difference whatsoever, in any gear. No difference in turbo sounds or anything. Boost still starts coming in at about 1500RPM and it really starts pulling at 1700+. If anything, it doesn't seem to run out of breath as quickly when you start going past 4000RPM.

From what I can see after removing the engine cover, the turbo is new, together with the plumbing to and from it. The intercooler is still the same (not even the fins were cleaned). The turbo seems to be another make, though. I can't make it out from the angle it sits, but it is definitely not a Garrett (Garrett GT1749V - factory) since the Garrett name was visibly embossed on the compressor housing.

And then VW wonders why the Turbo's are all crapping out

Made me wonder

Hello everyone,

So i had my turbo replaced last week tuesday, first things first, took my car to vw menlyn for the turbo to be replaced, upon receiving back my car i noticed that vw has burned a hole in my passanger seat (couldn't figure it out if it was someone that smoked in my car or what they have done) after looking closely it looked like a soldering iron burn mark, after heavy argument, vw menlyn agreed that it was their fault, they are replacing the seat cover today.

Now my mind went into overdrive....why did they need to use a soldering iron?? Did they piggy back the current ECU in order to give different readings to the ECU?? Everywhere i read the people say the car feel less powerful in 1st and 2nd gear and the "experts " said that is the software that makes the turbo boost less in 1st and 2nd to avoid overspinning etc, but now my question is, how does my ecu know my car is in 1st or 2nd gear if there is no electronics to the gearbox????

Now for the findings on my car, yes, it does feel less powerfull, but in a way more comfortable to drive (every drive now feels like a sunday afternoon drive to Harties...rustig) The crazy kick-back is gone, but don't get me wrong the car is still quick.

In anycase i'm not the happiest chappie with vw at the moment, after being such a fan for years, after all this drama i was almost at the point where i said no more vw for me, but then i test drove the Scirocco on Monday and one word.......AWESOME (a little light just appeared at the end of the VW tunnel for me again)

so after a long awaited time, that was my promised feedback :)

cheers guys

Doesn't make sense, though, the turbo failing due to RPM's. 120/320d BMW's boost a bit more than a VW without probs.

A Diesel driving at 4000+ rpm ?

Seriously, if you don't know how a diesel engine works, pls don't buy one. It's people like this that give diesel cars the bad rep they have ;)

so I had the turbo replaced.
car is a lot smoother on pull off in 1st and 2nd, but doesnt have the fierce pull it used to have.rather disappointed at that actually. probably because the torque range has been widened. cant really tell if it's any slower though overall, but it seems to need a little bit more foot to get going. I'll give it a week to get used to it.

You obviously haven't watched the 2007/8/9 Le mans...

Both Peugeot and Audi's Diesel LMP cars are governed at 5500 and 5000 RPM respectively.

A turbo, diesel or petrol, does not fail due to engine RPM's alone, and no, high engine RPM's were not the reason for the turbo failures on pre-2008 96KW TDi's. It was due to a manufacturing defect on the compressor shaft of the Garrett turbo, complimented by aggressive boost mappings on the ECU.

So you compare an Engine built by hand to perfection at a cost of a couple Million Dollars to your TDi mass production engine ?

Diesel engines run at insane Temps in relation to a normal Petrol engine. Increasing the rpm increases the temperature.

Off the top of my head, I think a diesel runs at 900 deg C. But like I said earlier, rather stay away from diesels going forward ;) Leave them to the people who know how to take care of them :p

i own a 2008 96kw polo and i am really cheesed about it, i read a while ago about the software update that they will do to the new tdi's. the software basically prevents your turbo from over-spinning in 1st and 2nd gear, which means less boost that equals to less power :(

i spoke to vw and the guy said only certain models turbo's will be replaced (i don't know exactly what the criteria is for a turbo to be replaced), the rest will get the software upgrade. He also said to me that the kw will drop and that s*cks.

How can you sell a 96kw car but we forgot to tell you that actually we will detune it for you to produce only 85kw....nice one!!!

Still love my car though :)

Maximum KW output is unchanged except for power in 1st and 2nd like you said. I know someone who already had this sorted out and the difference is minimal so don't worry. Anyway I reckon Revo your TDI up to 120kw and if your turbo blows they will replace it because of VW's mess up.

And before people starting going on about VW turbos dying, its only the 96KW Polo that is affected.

Most TDI 96KW turbo issues are from people who don't drive properly anyway. In a TDI you should never floor it in 1st or 2nd anyway until the engine is warm and the turbo is well oiled. Its the boosting too high before the car is warmed up that is generally the problem.

In any car, petrol or diesel, you should never floor it and avoid high RPMs when it is not at normal operating temperature.

The problem with the 1.9 TDI in this case is circled and at the front and rear of the car.

something i meant to ask quite a while ago, but never got round to or forgot ...........those of you that had your turbo's replaced as part of the recall...............does your turbo now whistle a lot more and louder than before when getting on the gas? If i give mine some foot the turbo really screams especially 2nd and 3rd,but it's noticeable in all gears, much louder than it did before it was swapped out. I can even hear it whistling as I drive along @120km/h in 6th....anybody else notice this?

One story a guy at vw told me is that the inlet housing (or something like that) was made of a material that overheated, and that overheated the oil....causing a vicious cycle and ends up blowing your turbo, so they will be replacing it with a turbo with a different inlet and different fins...i don't know all the technical terms :) (but once again not everyone's turbo will be replaced - wtf????).

here is what i am going to do, i'm taking my car for a dyno before and after it has been at vw, so i'll have it in black and white if there is a powerloss, i am getting all my facts in order. i want a new turbo (maybe my turbo already got hurt, even sligthly, because of vw's problem) that is y i demand a new turbo.

i will seriously take it further if there is any powerloss, i don't want a motorplan, i want the 96kw and 310 nM of torque i paid for, i bought it for a reason otherwise i would have bought a 74kw tdi. and the sad thing is i only have 15000 km on the clock, took my baby in for her first service last monday :(

i would have thought vw would have put up an announcement on their website, explaining, why they do the recall, what will they do, what effects will it have. i will feel so much better once i have the facts from vwsa and not from service advisors that each have his or her on story, some even doesn't know about this (i am serious, i phoned probably 10 dealers to see if their stories added up, and it did not). come-on vw lift your game, this is why the car market is in its &#*#*# (not aiming it at vw, all car manufacturers are guilty of this one)

Anycase, i hope we get to the bottom of this, and good luck to all and please keep us posted if anyone has taken their car to vw.

think i need a stiff brandy now :)

Any news so far?
