Walmart stores launching in SA

US retail giant and Massmart owner Walmart plans to open its first branded stores in South Africa in 2025.

In a statement on Tuesday, the company said the strategic move underscored Walmart's commitment to making high-quality, affordable merchandise accessible to more customers.
 
That's going to be interesting.
Just don't be the next "Game" in SA, and they might do OK.

Most important thing would be to not stock the same Massmart stuff you get from Game and Makro... Leroy Merlin did well for themselves by differentiating with the usual stuff found at Builder's etc.

We don't have the market size to justify the big and badass stores they have in the USA, but although they will start small, it will pick up speed eventually. It will be interesting to see how they set it up so that they don't compete with their own Massmart stores.

Amazon SA at this stage kicks Takealot's ass where delivery speed is concerned. Most of the items that are indicated as in stock is available for collection by 8am the next day in my experience. The partnership they have with Pargo also enables them to have a much wider collection point footprint than Takealot has.

At this point in time all the deliveries are free of charge, which is also a point in Amazon's favour , although that will also change in the future of course.
 
Are they too scared to completely just rebrand all Game and Makro stores to Walmart in fear of alienating existing clients?
Because I can see that being the eventual outcome. But competing against yourself across 3 different brands seems like a lot of effort to me.
 
Meh, probably some waterdown version of Walmart. Because we know the retail industry will get all pissy if they are threaten with competition.
 
Probably going to convert existing Game stores to Walmart stores. I think Game have been struggling lately and Makro has always been the looters store of choice.

To add to this
Amazon is slowly growing their collection of items being imported

Search Amazon Basics and you'll see the list slowly climbing

I also bought some weather stripping foam over the weekend which looks to be an imported product

There is a review from the US showing the exact same packaging and labelling that I got so Amazon South Africa is definitely looking into what products its customers are buying / searching for, importing it and then pricing it accordingly to our market

We already have that, but they are branded as SAPS stations or SANDF depots in SA. ;)

Finally, i wondered when they would just come out with it and stop allowing dumb politicians to scare them.

They've owned enough of Massmart to just go ahead now.

First thing i'm looking forward to: Walmart's turnover of staff to get rid of lazy people who do nothing and actually have proper help and service in our supermarkets.

This is true too.

Unfortunately its not just private-private competition. Ultimately someone private gets a Government cadre in their pocket with a Land Rover and then pressure comes from Government too..
