WANTED: Windows XP

That's nonsense. If you download an ISO from the net and hash check it against a an MSDN version, then there is no need to buy a genuine disk. Also, drivers are freely available from the manufacturers website as well as BTS driver packs. Ideally, the restore disks would be perfect because that would include drivers and will have SLP activation. That's obviously not available in this case.

+1 Complete BS being spewed.

To all those suggesting Linux, in desperation after it seems like my XP CD somehow got corrupt (it is quite old I guess), I tried Linux. Ubuntu to be more exact. 2 days later and I still can't get it installed. So to all those calling me a fan-boy: yes, I am a fan of Windows - it takes 1 hour to install! (When you don't loose your key and damage your CD) ... :p

I gave you a link on where to go download legit XP images so why are you biatching about linux now?

As for linux at the first screen you can get options to change to safe graphics mode which might help.

Did you try running Ubuntu 'Live' off a CD or USB before attempting to install it?

The same link that made me download a super dodgy download manager first which then installs all sorts of undesired rubbish without the option of not installing it? Oh yes, I got that thanx :-P Uninstalled it just as quickly and the three malware apps that came with it and regretting breaking my rule of staying clear of torrents.

Not biatching about Linux, just sharing my experience. That's what forums are for, no? And since others on this thread suggested it as an alternative, I thought they might be interested in my open mindedness in trying their suggestion.

I did indeed. Ran (seemingly) ok from USB. Just when I then actually install it, does it fail.

Yeah I've had all sorts of inexplicable things happening to installs. When running live can you see and mount the HDD? Maybe run the system live and format your hard drive first from there if you can access it.

I don't think you need an AMD iso (as per your post as referenced) since I've just tested a standard 386 12.04 Ubuntu iso on a AMD laptop that I have here, it works fine but maybe it becomes a problem when installing to hard drive....

Well you obviously have no idea what you are doing. Sorry to sound harsh but that site has sevred millions of people before you quite well without issue. You seem to have a problem with everything so one can only come to conclusions...

Help was given. Would you prefer me downloading a image and mailing it to you? I've pointed numerous people to that forum and you are the first one to complain. One can only presume it's a PEBKAC error as i've never had someone complain before and that forum is pretty well vetted and checked for crap.

I gave you a genuine XP Pro key. I then asked you to confirm if you got it working. You didn't reply. Thanks.

I had some time on my hands over last December and decided to utilize some of the old computer spares I had laying around. I managed to build up a few complete systems and then played around with Linux Ubuntu, Mint and Debian. For the systems with 512 Mb of memory there is only one OS worth the effort : Windows XP Pro 32 bit. I use it on and old Dell with a 1.5 GHz processor and 512 ram. I disabled all unnecessary Microsoft clutter and installed Firefox, Firebird and libreoffice. It is adequate to surf and do emails with. I could not get any of the mentioned Linux destros to work on it. If possible get a corporate edition if you do a lot of experimenting: else it would nag you to reregister every time you make a change to the system.

For older hardware, I guess you are better of with distros like Puppy, Vector, maybe even Slackware.

Keep in mind XP comes from around 2002, while you probably tried recent releases of ubuntu/mint/debian.

I installed windows 8 on a *** old celeron laptop... (2gb of ram, ram important)

it made a huuuge difference. Try a trial version from thepiratebay before buying the XP and see if that works.

XP

hey all, used to use this forum almost 7 years ago then , stopped.
I'm glad to be bak
First let me apologize for not creating a new thread, although i feel what im saying ties in with this one
Okay so i have an HP MINI which came with Windows 7 and microsoft office starter
Then i thought i upgraded to windows 7 ultimate legally and everything with one of those anytime upgrade software which microsoft was retailing. Turns out that didnt work well and i've been stuck with a fake copy of windows for too long basically.
Now i cant use windows update and its driving me nuts.
So can i revert back to the original OS, what are my options
PS I HATE WINDOWS 8

Am I missing something here? You said that:
- The HP came with W7. (so it is legal)
- You upgraded legally to Ultimate.
So where is the fake copy coming, is it the 'anytime upgrade' that did not work?
Do you still have the original Key?
