Just confirming, in order for your vehicle warranty to stay valid you just need to have it serviced when required at a reputable garage that can prove they did everything required for the given service? It does not have to be a dealership workshop?

I think recently on Fifth Gear they actually said you can do it yourself if you can prove you did everything according to the book. But I'm no mechanic so I won't be going that route. I just want to service my car at the local workshop I trust now that my service plan has run out.

Generally they require the dealership to be rmi certified.

If its the manufacturer warranty you ill need to service at the dealer, aftermarket warranty needs to be RMI

Next time buy a car that has a service plan or don't be so cheap :p
I did, one of the reasons I bought this very car back in 2010 was the fact that it had a 3 years service plan, it's a Corsa, not a Polo
Took it for its last service under the service plan yesterday and the service representative told me that the warranty is only valid when serviced by a GM workshop. I am not convinced about that, hence this thread.

But you're the resident expert on GM, so you should be telling us.

Besides, if you take advice offered on here and have a claim that is rejected are you going to tell GM that MyBB said it would be OK? The only people who can answer that question is GM.

Shame only 3 years/60 000km?

My VW has a 5 year/90 000km plan included...

Did your VW cost R160k new?
Your warranty will lapse if maintenance is carried out outside of the GM dealer network. This is standard practice across manufactures.

See for yourself.
Thanks, that was all I needed. Guess I will be voiding my warranty then in about a years time.

I didn't think the warranty was more than 3 years anyway...?

I know Hyundai has brought out 5y/150000km warranties lately, but 3y/100000km is fairly standard on most cars I know of.

Pointless to pay stealer fees when your vehicle is out of maintenance plan/warranty.
My thoughts exactly  I like GM, but not so much that I would pay stealer fees :D

All Opel vehicles sold after March 23, 2009, will be warranted by General Motors South Africa for 5 years or 120,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.

Oooooh you meant manufacturer warranty... Then it's stealers only. The long warranty on the new cars isn't because of massive confidence in their product, it's just to keep the dealerships in business so they have more dealers and sell more cars.
Extended warranties from third parties generally require rmi approval.

Figured out a cool solution around this problem, I will be taking my car to the dealer next year and have it serviced without service plan. I also know the service will cost me about R1000 because this year they did the 45,000km service even though the car only has 37,000km on the clock. Since I do not drive it a lot next year it will probably be close to 45,000km so I will have them do the 45,000km service again

Not sure how they will go about with signing the service book in the next block that says 60,000km but it's worth a try.

My car's service book reads xxxx km/ xxx months service. So if serviced on time lapsed and not km they still follow the schedule according to the amount of months and totally ignore the km bit, so they would do the 60,000km service schedule.

My car's service plan and warranty is the same length of time. The service plan comes standard with the car. The prices of the services on the invoice were so far reasonable. The 2nd hand bakkie bought through the same dealer, out of manufacturing warranty, we also service through them as they charged the same as any of the other reputable workshops around. I suppose it really does depend on the dealer you are dealing with.

They will do the 60000km service. Its not about distance, but about time in your case.
