Was your salary increase enough?

10% this year. Relatively low considering I got 108% after 1 year and 25% after 2 years. The first year was basically a probation period hence the substantial increase.

Anyway these percentages are meaningless without context. 5% is a lot more for somebody earning R30,000 than it is for somebody earning R5,000.

Its always just enough to sort of keep inflation happy til the next year. 5.06% this year i think.

February is coming up :D hopefully next year there is hope? Surely you can't survive without an increase? :(
Being a Junior, I don't think I could accept less than 20% :/ Holding thumbs for 30...

Also holding out for Feb - hopefully the company accountants can find some left over profit for increases.

Also: I don't know your industry - but my step up from junior to intermediate got me an almost 200% increase.

I got a 10% increase. I've learned not to complain but to be grateful for everything I receive. There are many people out there who are qualified and have experience but no job. There are also a lot of people who are unemployed because they are unemployable. The 10% increase is not a lot of money, I'm actually shocked that so far this year I have managed to only save R15000, shocking!!!

^^^ This!

Got 6.7% this year which is not too bad considering that I went through 2 retrenchments in 2 years. I'm surprised that so far this year I've only managed to eff my credit card by a further R12k! :wtf:

I havent got an increase for like whole time I have been at this job and that is almost 5 years.

They have million rand projects so cant see why they cant give me R500 extra or something

That is hectic bud, have you had a chat to them, are your colleagues also in the same boat?

When reading threads like this, hearing people chat, I count myself very fortunate in having a pretty decent job - times are indeed tough out there and looking to get worse.

My company does not pay yearly increases only way you can get an increase is to get promoted. I would leave but the experience and career growth I would not be able to get anywhere else. So I'm stuck for the next couple of years.

I guess I'm one of the few that had some luck. Got a 28% increase in September and another 10.9% now. I always say that I won't move to another company for less than a 30% increase in salary. At this rate I'm sticking! :-)

yep, I am in the same situation. You get an increase if they promote you or if you resign and they feel they need you.

I got a 50% increase 2 years ago when one of the guys in the team resigned. If you are a good "politician" you could get a promotion/increase if you can warm up to the right people.

Can't you take a hint?

lol

Don't you think this will increase staff turn over? So say I get to my dream position and I don't want to climb any higher that will mean my increases will stop so I will have to resign and go do the same job somewhere else.

Own business, so no increase for me. Usual 10% for my employees. They don't seem bothered, but on a 7k salary, 10% is not much? Night out at the pub.

Exactly! But I have heard and been told a few times that everyone is replaceable. We are a big company in terms of assets, with some very specialized staff, yet I have seen people come and go and it doesn't seem to bother management/HR. At one point they were recruiting between 15 and 20 people a month. (2 years ago and first half of last year)

I check the salaries also, since I am doing the costsheets for them and they dont seem to also get increases

At some point the institutional knowledge level will degrade to such a degree that it will impact your capacity to provide whatever services you provide to clients. Some businesses can recover from this but in a complex IT environment for example this is as good as cancelling the contracts for your support customers. I have seen many businesses (including many non-IT businesses) fail due to their attitude towards their staff.

There are always bad apples that make life unnecessarily difficult for everyone in the office but for the rest - treat them like gold and they will return the favour two fold.

Someone earning a market related salary that gets a decent increase if performance levels are good, bonus's for achievement etc. (not 13th cheque - many companies don't do this anymore) will work their rear ends off for a company that appreciates them (of course there is more to it, decent management etc but this is where it starts.) Keep people financially happy and you make things much easier for the other things to fall into place.
