Web Africa ADSL general feedback

Last night my webafrica account was useless, tried to download a 120MB file from sourceforge, at 20KB/s.

Over a line that syncs at 8039k

Entered a backup account at MWeb, download runs at 560KB/s.

What is going on?

Hi Pilgrim,

Are you on a Uncapped account and what star rating are you on?

Hi WAJustinW.

I have a capped RedAfrica account. Currently staying with friends for the next few months and they have their adsl line with Mweb (I entered my Redafrica account details on their router, everything worked very well for a few weeks)

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to know something. I was on a 4mb data account now pushed it to 10mb. With regards to streaming. What view quality are 4mb WA uncapped accounts able to run? Is anyone running 4mb home uncapped watching content at 720p? If so, what sites are you using? I'm a gamer (console only though) and I'm getting my next-gen soon. So watching content on whats coming in, etc etc is always nice at 720p.

Comments appreciated.

Hi Turpsicon,

You should be able to stream 720p videos perfectly fine on our 4mbs Uncapped on a 5-4 star rating. However, once you move into the more throttled zones 3 star up you will start to have a few issues.

Thought Id give Netflix a try on my 10mb capped account this afternoon. Unfortunately it streamed in the lowest quality possible except for the odd minor increase in quality. Download rate almost never went above 200KiBs.

Basically an unwatchable mess. Is this normal and can one expect a better quality at night?

Tried Netflix UK and got improved quality but still not great

Yeah my internet just went to a snails pace...lately my YouTube experience has been shoddy too.

Trying to download Google Chrome now and I'm going at 15kb/s on a 2mb uncapped line. New installation of Windows so one can't say its the pc.

The line quality is fine too so yeah?

--EDIT--

It took 50 min to download Chrome (34MB) at 11kb/s on a 2mb line...so what up?

Hi Alan,

Very strange that you had this experience on a capped account. Can you PM me your customer code so I can ask our ADSL team to take a look.

Hi Spooner,

What star rating are you currently on? Also what time are you doing these downloads?

3 stars at the moment. But even http browsing is terrible. All protocols are terrible. When I left MWEB I was downloading up to 100GB a month and never had issues. Now I've done 40GB only so far this month and I have this issue...so not impressed at the moment.

If this is what 3 stars is like I'll hate to see 2 stars and 1 star. But at this rate I doubt you'll even be able to get there?

At night it usually sits at maybe 50kb/s to 60kb/s

If you on a 3 star your account is throttled and it is shaped even more during the day as its a Home based account. You should see an improvement in quality after 5pm. But you will need to drop down stars to start getting back to the normal quality of service especially on a 2mbs uncapped account.

Our Home based accounts were developed in such a way that most of the usage is mean't to happen after 17h00 during weekdays, weekends and majority of downloads to be scheduled between 12-6am daily. That's why we added Download Plus for free on all our Uncapped accounts.

If you have any downloads happening I would recommend you schedule them for 12-6am so you can start dropping down stars.

I'm on a trial account with Webafrica on my 10mb, and it does the same. I had my account sent to the engineers to be checked, still waiting on them. I've been on mweb for a test, it's almost the same as well as a trial afrihost account and that was worse.
Then I've tried a Telkom account (capped), and had no luck either. I think there is generally something going on with the network for all ISP's. My account is on cancellation pending, and I don't see where else to go to now. To be frank, i'm getting a headache now as I really don't know where or what I should do next.

I feel that webafrica has let me down but I also feel I.S. is responsible for this. Service as well as browsing isn't the same anymore. It's like everytime I call in, the more frustrated i get. It however still seems as if Webafrica has the lowest latency.

(sigh) Just out of curiousity... on 3-stars, will my playstation network gaming be influenced online with the throttling?

Then how come, on three stars only, you throttle me so badly I can barely load Facebook? So what is one star like? No Internet at all???

I would say do a port reset. But like i said in my previous post. Things have just not been the same.
Test also with a trial account, afrihost gives them for free but you need to register.

Edit: The trial is a 1Gig though, but at least you can see where the problem maybe lies.

Do you download during the day on the weekends too? If so that would be why. Move your downloads to midnight to 6am then your stars wont drop.

Hi turpsicon,

Your playstation network gaming should be fine on a 3 star and should be better after 5pm or weekends. I have an uncapped account currently on 3-star and was able to play GTA5 and Fifa just fine on my PS3.

I would like to take a look into your speed problems. Can you PM me trace route results local/international as well as speed test results and your customer code.

how is webafrica's streaming on twitch?

I will be switching to webafrica on the 1st November.
Do I just need to signup on the website, choose package and setup a debit order?
