Web Africa ADSL general feedback

http://www.pingtest.net/result/99495653.png

WTF is going on??? This is worse than what my telkom uncapped was. Is there no decent adsl isp in this country?????

Anyone else having issues tonight? I tried playing BF4 but the lag is just horrific. Ingame ping shows it is fine but there's definitely lag, did the pingtest and now I see why.

PS: On a CAPPED account with 2mb line, nothing else is using my bandwidth either
That looks more like a congested exchange, especially if it happens on more than 1 ISP. You should do a few traceroutes on different ISP accounts.

You will find all ISPs bad if it is a congested exchange, in which case you need to get Telkom to sort that out first.

Thanks for the reply, but I highly doubt it is a congested exchange. A friend of mine lives a block away from me and is on the same exchange and has no problems whatsoever. He is on Mweb uncapped

Sounds like you're assuming things and jumping to conclusions.

Test with another ISP on a different network such as AH free 1GB account.

If your 2nd hop in the tracert is high then its your line/exchange.

People are too quick to blame the ISP, and 99% of the time a high ping of the magnitude you're experiencing is NOT the ISP but Telkom.

Or you can just use Mweb :p

I am sorry to say, but the fact that your friend's experience is fine means absolutely nothing.

At one time, I had 2 adsl lines to my house, the exact same same house. The 1 line was on a congested exchange, the other wasn't. That alone, proves your theory null and void.

You should test with more than 1 isp, post traceroutes, and I bet more than 1 person will be able to point out, you are on a congested exchange, if that is the case.

You can get free 1GB capped account from Afrihost and Web Africa, who are both on completely different backbones. It is not like you have anything to lose, but you have the chance to pin point your real issue. Once you know what the real issue is, you can at least start getting the right people to do something about it.

If you have issues with latency on a capped account, chances are very high, your exchange or line is the issue.

Hi spirits88,

Please do a trace route to a local and international site and post the results here so we can take a look.

At the moment we have no network related issues.

I would not trust pingtest.net at all:
Capture.jpg

No ping of mine to any server in the world has ever been this high, their app must be broken or something, but that's just not a real value.

Fair enough, I should mention I was still on the telkom uncapped account just last week and didn't experience any issues like this(only reason I switched was because of the account just being dead randomly for no reason). So now with the switch to WA I'm suddenly on a "congested exchange"? But ok you make a fair point I will test with free accounts from other ISP's when experiencing the high pings again.

I guess it is also possible that the BF4 servers as well as the pingtest app were both screwed last night although that is a bit far fetched.

Anyway here are my traceroutes as requested WebAfrica Helper:

Those look 100% fine. Will be important to see what they look like at the time of experiencing the high latency issues. Traceroutes give a lot more detail than pingtest or just a ping in game. It helps techies find where the problem is.

Timeouts on your router are concerning :(

Tried to play BF4 again a few minutes ago, lagged again very badly. Pingtest seems fine at this time. Maybe the servers are screwed, anyone else here play BF4 and experience lag issues?

So those are the traceroutes taken immediately after the game was lagging? If so, it does indeed look like something is broken, and it is not exchange congestion.

Which BF4 servers are you playing on?

I did the traceroutes 5min after playing BF4, it was on one of Mweb's 60 player servers based in Cape Town. However it seems like the other night that all of the BF4 servers I try to play on lag badly, those based in JHB and CT.

What bothers me, I haven't seen any of the other players complain about lag in the game's chat so I don't know if it is only me having issues.

The problem seems odd, not a general one. You should make a support ticket to WA.

Im going to sign up a free account with Afrihost first to see if I still have the lag issues, otherwise I will submit a ticket as suggested thanks for the advice.

Meanwhile if someone else here plays BF4 could give feedback I would appreciate it.

Is this PC or console? I play BF4 on PS4 and the in-game chat always has a bit of delay. Although on the PS4 you can use chat independently from the game which is much more realtime.

It is on PC, but it seems you misunderstood the ingame chat is not the issue. I just meant I didn't see the usual "LAAAAAG" shouting in the chat that would suggest the entire server is lagging.

Why does my line drop every night when I queue my downloads from 00:00 till - 06:00am ? all other isps ive used in the past this rarely every happened ( Telkom, mweb, afrihost ).
