Web Africa ADSL general feedback

I have changed our account to Business Capped 270Gb today.
Will report how it goes.
So far, still slow.
Speedtest funnily enough works fine on both Business Capped and Home Uncapped, which makes you wonder if all ports haven't been programmed to prioritise any queries from that domain without actually knowing how it works. But browsing, retrieving emails is slow for the most part so far.

The free 2Gb account seemed to be OK, but then I only tried that out last night.

and i am still on 5stars and on 41gb for the month, all after 5 usage..

Home capped accounts are on a higher bandwidth priority than home uncapped so the performance will always be better. How much data do you intend on using per month? Capped might be a better option than Home uncapped as you can get a 600gb package (200gb anytime + 400gb download plus) for R599 or the 360gb (120gb anytime + 240gb download plus) for R399. As you can see your experience will be much better on the capped service.

Slow again...taking 30 seconds to a 1 min just to load some pages

This is beyond pathetic.

Home uncapped has never been this bad.

This is one of the few sites that loads fast...

Ya Chris I'm getting pretty much the same results as you. Currently on 3 stars, 30.2GB done on the last 12 days and everything except local pages like news24 and mybroadband are crawling.

I really don't mind shaping/throttling of things like P2P, I mean thats the only way to maintain quality amongst the network but when everything crawls that just means my whole line/experience is being shaped/throttled.

I wish I could say its my line, but my AH trial account works fine and even the WA trial account. As for any "speedtest" service out there, they mean absolutely nothing as those websites/protocols are definitely let run at maximum speed no matter which network you are on.

Come on WA just because you are starting to get a massive influx of users who abandoned other ISPs for poor service doesnt mean you can become sloppy, as this is what made people leave those ISPs before. Praying on a miracle here!

I am trying the Web Africa Business Uncapped Pro 10Mbps for the month of November.

I would really like to have some clarification regarding how much "Uncapped" bandwidth I am "allowed" to use during business hours (07:00 - 00:00) within the 10-day rolling window before moving down a rung in terms of service levels?

As it stands, my line is only able to sync at a maximum of 6Mbps. On a really good day, it allows for a constant download stream of 700KBps or about 2,2 - 2,4 GB an hour. For comparison sake, a 10Mbps line should allow for 3,8 GB an hour (Reference: http://www.hellkom.co.za/download-projections/).

My average usage over the last 10 days is only about 15 GB per day (HD video streaming/Uploading, Xbox One/PS4 digital game downloads, iOS updates, VPN connections etc), which works out to an average that is less than 890MB an hour during Web Africa's business hours (07:00 - 00:00). That excludes downloads that are scheduled to occur between 00:00 - 06:00.

This kind of usage has resulted in our service being downgraded from Tier 1 (Great) to Tier 2 (Affected) courtesy of the 10-day rolling window. I have done my best, sometimes at an inconvenience to my business, to manage downloads in fear of reaching Tier 3 (Harshly Affected).

In my opinion, this seems a little draconian for a service that is aimed at 10Mbps lines and costs R1799 per month.

As such, I would really like to know what the 'hard' usage limits are and why they are, in my current experience, set so low for a 10Mbps Business service?

Hi Snah85,

We have no set bandwidth data thresholds on our uncapped accounts so we cannot provide you with any figures. We have a KB article on how the Business uncapped works at this link.

You can also use download plus for your downloads so that it does not push you to the harshly affected zone and it might get you out of the affected zone as well.

having a lot of trouble streaming Youtube clips they just stop loading within the first few seconds. This is problem that keeps popping up from time to time with WA all the years I've been with them. Gets rather tiresome

Alan are you running on a Home uncapped account?

What star rating are you currently on?

These capped accounts are fast losing appeal.Tried to download something at lunchtime and got 100KB/s on a 10 MB line.I especially moved away from uncapped to avoid this.Seems these accounts are nothing more than glorified uncapped accounts where speeds only pick up outside business hours .

yah,but look at the downlaod speed and time!
on 5stars and get that speed, does that look right, and i know its higher, but, its After hours and on FIVE stars

theres no way it should be this slow,

reading your post,"as you can see your experience will be much better on the capped service."
with that ur saying the uncap only run at 10-20% of the speed on 5stars and its ok ,not gonna do anything about it,but cap will work so just pay more and use that insted

atlest it got getter later that night, will see how it goes when i get home

edit, looking at above post, cap also have problem,so whats gonna be now,
use business cap,its got a higher priority and will have a "better experience "?

Hi Mythdragon,

I have requested feedback from our network team around this as there does seem to be a few uncapped customers having this problem and will provide feedback as soon as I get an update.

We have see an increase in network usage over the past months but our capped accounts are performing well at the moment with most customers very happy so I need to dig a little deeper.

Please PM me your account details so I can get our guys to take a look.

So this thread was started in 2011 and is barely 300 pages strong. Is that due to a lack of popularity for WA or is it because, for the most part, the product works?

Works for me. Between a friend and myself we tried about 6 different ISPs this year.

In the WA customer zone they offer 'Home ADSL' capped and also 'Home ADSL Pro' capped. Can someone please tell me the difference. I assumed that capped was unshaped, so I don't know why they have 2 grades.

Also which one is equivalent to the 1gig free package?

My home uncapped account is usually slow as well again!!! I did a speedtest after 5pm and this is what I get.

I'm on a 4MB and usually average on +-3.40MB

I'm currently on a 5 star rating so I have no clue why my internet is running slower than it should.

I pay for a service, I stay within the necessary bandwidth usage to get the best of what the product can offer and this is what I get!!!

I did a speed test before 5 and it was much slower than below results.

17:25 - Not entertained

17:53 - Getting better

18:08 - Almost there

My question is, why am I being shaped/throttled when I'm in the 5 star rating?????

The free 1GB package is home capped. As that's where you sign up for it...

The Home capped pro has less shaping during the day. Most people are fine with home capped though.
