Web Africa ADSL general feedback

Had another dismissal night of only 42 kbps on torrents. Normal streaming seemed fine though. How do people get 50TB with that kind of through put.

Strange...my line was literally running at 455kB odd from 00:05 till 05:55. Was lovely.

Check your torrent client settings - some torrents won't allow full download speed if you have limited your upload speed. Might be worth checking that.

Uhm, the 50 TB is just marketing really. They could just as well have said uncapped. No DSL service will be able to download 50 TB in that time.

6 hours per night * 30 nights (give or take) = 180 hours
50 000 GB / 180 hrs = 278 GB/hr * 1000 /60 /60 = 77 MB/s * 8 = 617 Mbps required

So you could only manage that with a 1 Gbps fiber connection (if they offered this promo for fiber).
 
I wasn't trying to get the 50TB. I just want the 120GB that I paid for. If I can get that I will be happy. My first month with a paid account is not starting well. But I just read that cape town is having issues so might not be WA fault after all.
 
The last few nights international has been terrible. I get 8.7Mbps locally but international goes at 3.3Mbps. What gives?

i know :P

i set it to 8mbps get 10.2

but i looked outside today and saw at the telephone pole the "box" its more a cylinder shape one,its horizontal and looks open at the bottom so it can get water in,so looked around if i can see more of them,and there rest of the "boxed" in my neighborhood is vertical

so looks like the one i used got loos and fallen over,and may gotten wet from the rain
so think i should ask the tech guy from telkom that always comes around at my work,if he can come check it out,also maby see how the quality of the physical cable is,and the line quality,to see if i loose SNR from the pole to the house,if so,that they can maby rewire it

I think you've found the source of your problems.

Just one bad connection will make snr low.

edit: Is it better at 8mb?
 
i hope it is that,and they can fix it and even make it better than it was b4

its seems to be working ok
on 8 will change back to 10later and see how it goes

but a 5snr drop on 2mbps,is that a normal drop?

edit: some youtube vids dont want to stream,but then refresh the page and it works
irritating to refresh everythe page but it works :)

edit,tested 10mb on adsl2+,works crap :/

it really sucks to loose that extra 200kb/s in streaming don't make that big difference,as 8 is enoth for 1080p,but downloads take longer

strange tho,when i tried to connect to adsl1 few weeks ago it wouldn't let me,but now that my snr droped this low,i can

Ye, I would log a noisy line fault on telkom.co.za, as even tho its working at 8mb, it could get worse, you have a bad connection somewhere.
 
Ok. So torrent settings was to blame for the low speeds I think. Made some tweaks and last night was able to pull all of my downloads. While running steam downloads at the same time.
 
I have a quick question......

I schedule my downloads from 12am to 6am every night. But I have noticed that when my queue is empty and I add files to be downloaded at 05:30am and then start the queue, it will download around 500MB and stop at 6am as it should.

Then I will check my usage summary and it will say I have used this 500MB between 6am and 7am and I have only used 1.50MB between 5am and 6am.

Does this usage summary calculate the bandwidth used from the previous hour (5am-6am) and display the it for the next hour (6am-7am)?

Anything under 6kp/s upload limit will get throttled by most trackers, so if you put 6kp/s or more (i do 10 to be safe) in your global settings you should be fine :)

I also limit my upload to 10kB/s, just so I don't saturate my upload link which causes latency to skyrocket.

I always get line speed by keeping global connections to 200, 100 connections per torrent and downloading 2 torrents at a time.

The client I use throttles at 10.

I keep it to around 40 anyway.
