I'm trying to pull a torrent at my full line speed, so I've swapped from my Mweb 2 Mbps premium uncapped account to my WebAfrica Home ADSL Pro account (5+20 GB) but my speed is even worse. On Mweb I was pulling close to 100 KB/s but with WebAfrica I'm struggling to hit 1.5 KB/s (that's not a typo!) - are the capped accounts shaped?

On another topic, what's the difference between Home ADSL and Home ADSL Pro?

Edit - I swapped to my Afrihost account and I'm sitting at 180 KB/s.

Home adsl pro should be unshaped i'm sure?

That is odd, my webafrica normal capped account is sitting at 2MBps. (20mbps)

It definitely isn't, or at least isn't behaving as unshaped. The following speeds are average/peak:

Mweb: 100 KB/s / 118 KB/s
Afrihost: 160 KB/s / 183 KB/s
WebAfrica: 0.8 KB/s / 1.4 KB/s

Try signing up for a test 2gig account and see what your performance is like with that acc.

I am currently on a business uncapped 10 meg account with Web Africa.
My general usage seems to keep me in the affected category.
My question is, will video streaming always remain good, even during business hours, will I have problems streaming during the middle of the day?

Obviously getting into the harshly affected category will bring my line down to a crawl, but my general usage seems to keep me above that.

Guys,

Some assistance?

Firstly, looking at getting a 2mb line, is it better to get it directly through telkom, or through another ISP? why?

Secondly, how does the uncapped account compare to other ISPs? Fair usage policy? Shaping? Throttling?

Cheers.

Business Pro uncapped here… what's up with bandwidth since 16h00 today?

Lucky if I get 0.5Mbps on my 4Mbps line and there are constant dropouts :p

It's getting better as it gets later:

All fine and well giving us double data to use between midnight and 6am on capped accounts, but completely pointless if we can't download anything due to completely rubbish speeds...

I am thinking international has an issue. If I ping continuously to www.bbc.co.uk and www.cnn.com get randomly get "request time out"

Adrian, all those Speedtest results are to Telkom SAIX in Randburg.

I'm getting full speed on my 6meg line to Telkom SAIX Randburg.

Try running RouterStats or RouterStats Lite depending on your router. You can then monitor the snr on your line and see if it drops out. I experienced this a year ago where the my snr was erratic but line never disconnected, causing very bad download speeds.
