Web Africa ADSL general feedback

Bad lag again at ~21:00, had to switch to Afrihost, to keep on playing. No problem with the Afrihost connection.
WA just seems not to be able to handle stable high data transfer.

A tracert to the slow server or website.

Ill do the tracert etc, when I get home later. But I have the suspicion that you will learn nothing from it. Maybe I just misunderstand what the tracert does, but my latency is fine most of the time. Doing a speed test on speedtest.net gives it at ~230ms but when the data transfer is tested the graph looks quite spiky and does not get close to the 4mb line capacity.
I would do 3-5 transfer rate tests and all of them will have significant different values (i.e. 1.2mb - 3.6mb) while the latency remain within 50ms (this is to Paris).
To be honest it feels like the account is being shaped to hell, somewhere. Home ADSL Pro: Smart 10GB (up to 10mbit line)..

The results from Speedtest.net, may be insignificant and at the end of the day I do not really care what they are. I am concerned when I actually play games it becomes unplayable and very frustrating. To have this problem with one ISP and not the other is even more frustrating. And at the moment I seem to be not alone with this problem judging from the other posts in this thread.
If Pornolio and myself have similar problems living in completely different provinces not the same exchange, what could the problem be?

I must admit WA does not feel as smooth as it used to be, I have noticed an annoying delay when issueing commands and whilst it is playable and alot better then it was a few days ago, it just does not feel the same.

Atm my Telkom account feels alot smoother and better then WA :(

strange thing is the tracert looks fine but there is def something wrong somewere, u notice it right away in game

Latency is very bad in game now, takes me 2 tries to get in and then like 2000 ms response times.....and A LOT of disconnections. With WOW the home and world latency are very far apart and when everything is smooth sailing these two are normally close.

My latency is also pretty bad. It as been like that for around a week now.

Morning guys,

Not sure why there are still being issues experienced here. Everything from last week has been resolved and shouldn't be a problem anymore. If there are still issues either from over this weekend or today, please FW the following information to our ADSL guys so we can pinpoint the issues:

  • Client Code
  • Tracert to slow or non-responsive server
  • What protocol is slow. Gaming, HTTP, HTTPS, Streaming, RDP, VPN etc etc

Saturday was perfect sitting all day on 240-280 even 25man raid at 310. Seems like whatever it was is now resolved. On Sunday from15:00 some bad spikes but after 18:00 it returned to normal again.

It seemed to be ok over the weekend, although i did not play much this weekend

Will test it tonight

Very conflicting results... I tried last night on unshaped and it was a joke. Switched to my backup account and just stayed on it whole night. Dunno whats going on, but the fact that you guys were OK and some of us other guys werent... I dont know...

Thanks Jeff for this update.

According to this same status page the issue is now sorted, which is certainly not the case for me.

It took a few minutes for this page to load; my gmail chat can not connect; I am having problems with other pages on the net. Youtube though is working not too badly. I am able to stream internet radio

how come y'all have alternative ISPs? do you pay 2 lots of internet accounts?

yup pay for two isp accounts. Incase one stops working like with whats happening with web africa atm

Also a way to prove to an isp that the problem is not on the exchange, pc, virus that kinda stuff cause they tend to blame everything else before looking at their own network

It is actualy crazy if you think about it but most peeps in SA (more so gamers) have just got used to the idea that u have to have a second isp backup account because u almost know that somewere along the line service levels will drop or something will happen that causes the service not to work properly its like its a 100% garantee

Well believe it or not... tonight on my unshaped + proxy... its actually great !
Dammit I hope I did'nt jinx myself now... alt tabbing back into the raid :-p

I have reached my limit of patience this evening. Sat down after another hectic latency weekend where the gaming experience in WOW is nothing but "". Due to the lag, latency spikes, I tried after 2 weeks to enter a normal instance run. Result:: 3 DC's and not being able to re-log.

this evening's experience...

17:30 - Home latency 2500 World latency 1800... DC | relog::: latency 185 & 305 which turned out to rise to 900+ within 30 sec... DC | tried instance run and disaster.

18:00 - latency 263 & 471. world experience leaves a huge sluggishness and you seem to sit with DC's. this is when I could not re-log and lost loot and the complete final fight of my run.

Did two Traceroutes to eu.battlenet and both indicated normal 285ms latency. But that is no reflection to what is encountered within the game itself.

I started asking myself why WA would consider that everything is OK according to the posts made. If you look at the trace routing there seems to be decent trafficking. I started thinking that WA might not be the guilty party and that we are having Blizzard moments again.

As a control test, I switched over to my Afrihost account and opened WOW again. Lo and behold... the latency was 284ms and 294ms. But there is an immediate difference in gameplay. everything was operating smoothly.. a huge difference and contrast to what just has been happening to the WA unshaped account.

I tried another instance run.... being starved for some runs over two weeks is hard for this old die hard addict. THis time using AH account was pure pleasure. I am sorry WA, but for now the AH account stays on.. From 19:00 until 23:15 I had immediate responses ingame.. no DC's.. no latency spikes as encountered earlier on. These have been all the things I have counted on WA to provide. I'm using prepaid unshaped on both accounts... AH = pleasure and WA = frustration.

Well, according to WA there is no problem since their Status page indicates 'all services are operational'. This frustrates me the most since everyone has been experiencing what you've described for a few weeks now, yet WebAfrica acts as if nothing is wrong and tries to handle it on a case by case basis. It's absurd.

All they do is ask for traceroutes yet everyone has already proved that the traceroutes are fine yet the gameplay problem with high latency spikes remain. When everyone switches to their non-WA backup accounts, everything is fine. Clearly pointing to the WA network as the culprit. Yet WA simply ignores this straightforward piece of logic.

A WA rep then swings by the forum once a day to throw some repetitive marketing one-liner that doesn't address the problems at all and the WA Status page remains the same. It's turned into a farce now.
