I was reaaally hoping you wouldn't say that hahah. Already shot them a message :) Had to have the CPE replaced this time last year as well, guess its an annual event for me haha

The thing I don't get is that packet loss would affect my download as well, but that is fine.

When you send a packet, you start by sending a SYN packet to a server, the server then sends you back a SYN with the data you requested and an ACK which is an acknowledgment of being requested to send the packet, then you reply with an ACK of your own which tells the server you got the data you asked for. This is how TCP works, it's called a handshake. If the ACK or SYN packet is lost (due to packet loss) the server or client is left waiting for the packet to come, but it never come, so it requests it again and again until it does come. The longer the latency between the client and server, the more this back and forth continues which hurts TCP throughput both up and down.

@websquadza (or maybe even @Looney because you cut over from CI and you're on vuma aerial as well right?) I don't have to wait for CI to release my line on Vuma Aerial because it's PPPoE right? I want to start paying you money sooner and have a decent internet connection...

Unfortunately you do have to wait for CI to release your line. But as long as you tell them that you will honour the 30 day calendar notice they will release it for you same day (well that’s what happened in my case).

@Looney is right on this one. You will need to let your ISP know to release your line. Vuma Aerial isn't one large PPPoE pool, rather your CPE is actually assigned to an ISP's VLAN.

Yeah... I’m not complaining at all... jeezuzz

Well ****, just use ExpressVPN with Google Drive and you can get max line upload speeds lol. @websquadza don't suppose you can investigate where Psychz (the colo provider that ExpressVPN uses) peers in ZA, then you could hop onboard there? It's one of the Teraco DC's I believe...

Can you PM me your IP when you're connected? Would just like to run some traceroutes.

It's definitly not a 'me' issue, as the issue would persist when running over a VPN, since the traffic still originates from my line, my switch, my computer. I have no packet loss without a VPN, nor with a VPN so it's certainly not that.

Web Client (Google Chrome) is the same, can't push anything higher than 35Mbit. Connect to ExpressVPN and I'm pushing full line speed.

There are also 3 or 4 Teraco datacenters in JHB now I believe, and I'm not sure if websquad peers with every one.

I suspect it has something to do with traffic routing within the websquad network, as that is the only thing I could think of that makes sense - since ExpressVPN would ignore websquad's routes in favor of it's own.

Only one NAP in Joburg, and we're peered with it, twice. And we're peered with Google in SA across NAP and JINX.

Will need to check that TCP window. There are isolated cases where for some reason Google sends your traffic to a very remote server, but in general, you should be sending traffic to local and get linewire speed. We tested both web and client today and managed line speed

@Looney

Hi there, does your router have QOS, when I enable on my er-x, speed drops to 200Mb/s?

Do I have to build a PC router?

I'm ready to throw in the towel on gigabit, don't get full speed anyway. Maybe it's my light output.

Think I'm going to settle on 100/10 at month end, as I just have to keep spending money so get this working optimally.
