WebAfrica Capped ADSL

Still get wildly divergent results even on Business Capped during different times of day. Decided to try working on the Bus. capped account yesterday - all was well, nice speeds, great response times etc, until late afternoon. I'd been working on a server in Germany via SSH all day, when the usual afternoon slowness I've come to expect kicked in. Suddenly my SSH session was so laggy, it became completely unusable. Meanwhile access to a website running on the same server was lightning fast. Seems a lot like your shaping rules are a one size fits all, as when NNTP speed goes down the drain during the same period, SSH (which is also encrypted) suffers too. I had to log onto another account to keep working. Surprising, for a Business account.

Silly question...but have you run a tracert and ping test to the server when that slowdown happens?

Has anyone here used the Business Capped and Business Capped Pro products for gaming? I'm probably going to sign up for the 180GB business capped next month, but I see that gaming has a better priority profile under business capped PRO. Would just like to know if latency gets any lower or more consistent?

If we order the capped account + line bundle now will it get pro rated for November or should I wait until the end of the month?

Edit,

For example if I get the 40+80 account and line bundle, will the total amount of data be reduced to reflect the number of days left in November with a corresponding price drop. Or will i get the full data complement and will need to use all of it by the end of November at the normal price?

I'm also on Business Capped during business and normal hours and also do a lot of work over ssh and VPN. I haven't particularly noticed a pattern like that, but I have noticed something interesting recently. I'm not trying to explain what you experience, but it's worth a mention and I'm in a typing mood.

I found, the last week or so, that every morning around more or less the same time I would get really horrible latency on ssh, to the point where I just got frustrated and did something else for a while. One day I thought about opening up my Mikrotik console to just see what is going on. Turns out something was saturating my upload throughput, which turned out to be my phone uploading something to a google server. I then realised that I had a huge video on my phone that was trying to upload over the last few days but never finishes. I think the reason why this happened more or less at the same time for a few days is because the Google+ app would detect location change when I go down stairs for my first cup of tea where I connect to other base stations and back upstairs and then getting better signal from different towers again. If I close the app it stops uploading and ssh is pleasant again. The upload saturation does affect download throughput, but not dramatically enough that I noticed it.

On a different note, I also found that GMail sometimes just stops responding. Reloading the page struggles and after a while everything is back to normal. Long ago I thought this was due to VPN DNS ordering, but experiencing the same issue without the VPN caused me to look into it again. I previously noticed every time after this happens I get a different IP for mail.google.com. Once again looking at my Mikrotik console, I noticed that the DNS record for mail.google.com has a TTL of 30 seconds. My current theory is that Google frequently routes users to different servers during the day and when this happens, I still try to use the old IP for 30 seconds until it times out, re-resolves and then my browser finally connects to the new IP. I have now set my DNS cache max TTL to 8 seconds and so far have not noticed this issue again, but I would say that Google really should be keeping your session on the old IP active for longer to make the switch smoother.

I didn't save them, but they looked perfectly normal, which is what leads me to believe it's the result of shaping on a protocol / encrypted content type, rather than latency on a route hop.

They don't pro-rate, so if you buy now, buy a small package that gets you to month end at a small price and then upgrade it when November starts. Upgrade is instant, downgrade/cancellation is a long notice (end of next month).

<snipped>

It's an interesting theory - but then I'd expect the same thing to happen when I'm sitting on an Axxess account all day, and it doesn't.

I'm not trying to dis WA or punt Axxess, I genuinely would like to sign up with WA to take advantage of the extra gigs for the same price, but I haven't been able to get to the bottom of the very different performance I'm seeing across all of their account types compared with everyone else.

Any Capetonians here who moved from Afrihost uncapped to WebAfrica capped? How is the experience , youtube, P2P, normal download e.g. iOS update ?

Would they prorate the line portion? R250 for 8 days is a bit steep. :)

I'm starting with them in November. Tried their free account, which is a standard home capped profile - and it was just lovely. I don't do p2p at all though so cannot say anything there.

Gaming was glorious. Solid 200-ish ping to overseas servers, local was quick as lightning - AND STABLE! NNTP came down at full 450kB/s line speed whenever I downloaded something.

Best thing though...no packet loss!

I still have streaming issues though. Might be my line, haven't phoned Telkom yet to do a port reset. Might need to move my line to WA to just do it on the fly.

I'll let you know next month, I just finished cancelling my Afrihost account, so I'll only be up and running with webafrica in November. I can already feel my stress levels decreasing.
