WebAfrica Capped ADSL

I tried signing up for an account, but I keep getting some useless fraud check warning, tried phoning, but it seems no one works there on weekends? Who can recommend another ISP please, I need this up on Monday for my business?

Sure it's not your anti virus stuffing you around?

I've signed up middle of the night before no issues.

Very unhappy here. Just moved from a 4Mb business uncapped Afrihost connection to a web africa 120+240 capped account with a 40Mb VDSL line. I can say I am not at all happy right now with download speeds. Speedtest.net scores are awesome, usually full line speed around 37 Mb/s and I can stream HD video very quickly. But for downloading, I can almost never get above 11Mega bit's per second and I signed up on the weekend, I am scared to see what week days look like. Torrents are worthless. I left a very well seeded torrent to go through the night and it downloaded less than a gig through the middle of the night, it was flying when I moved to my afrihost free 1gb capped account. With Steam I download a game using web africa's steam servers, it rarely goes above 20Megabits and usually hovers around 10Mb.

Using newsgroups, if I use an international server like ususenet or astraweb or newsgroup direct I am maxing out around 150KB/s when I use the local web africa servers it jump us to 11Mb/s, still only 1/4 of my line speed for local web africa servers. But 1/40th of my line speed for downloading from international news servers on a sunday morning.

I also tried using a VPN, and it would max out at 140KB/s.

It seems these capped accounts are only for browsing and streaming and very heavily shaped when it comes to any kinds of downloads. I was under the impression that by going to a capped account I would have a lot of flexibility. My afrihost business uncapped almost never shaped me no matter what I did. I am probably just going to go back the 4Mb uncapped as I like to be able to use my line the way I see fit. I wrongly assumed that was the purpose of a capped account.

Lol dude.

You're comparing a business account to a home account.

For your needs you should rather look at:

Sure, but 1/40th the line speed on a capped account? what home user would be satisfied with that? I'm going to upgrade to their business capped and see how much of a difference it makes. But I'm not convinced it will make that much for a company that shapes that heavily.

Highly doubt it, it's a message on their webpage after signup. I will try using another email address and see. thnx

Try screen shot it if it happens again and just blank out personal info.

It really sounds like there's a program interfering.

I agree with you, but remember that WA capped data is half the price of Afrihosts. Let me know how the business data goes.

Try the business capped pro account, then torrents and nntp is not throttled. You will see a massive difference.
The business capped non-pro may be better than the home capped, but if 40Mpbs torrent speeds is what you want, business capped pro.

Thanks, but the cost is insane for that, I'm not needing a perfectly unshaped account. I can get an uncapped 10mb business line from afrihost for that price. I haven't used capped in a very long time as I've been with afrihost business uncapped which is pretty cheap. I was just shocked to see that web africa's home capped accounts are shaped just as much as their home uncapped accounts. I was under the wrong impression that capped accounts were not deprioritized to the same level as uncapped accounts. I don't need 40Mbps torrents or VPN, I'd be happy to get 10Mb, but 150Kb on a sunday morning is just a ridiculous amount of shaping for a VPN or newsgroups. Torrents are shaped even much more than that. it looks like Afrihost capped is a far better deal in my opinion for a bit more money if I want to keep my 40Mb VDSL as I don't see anything close to the same level of shaping.
Thanks for the input though.

In "light" of this power-shedding I find it hilarious how much these ISP packages are designed like Eskom's delivery model. During the day everybody is screwed, with you're being shaped or only have limited cap (turn off geysers, stoves etc sound familiar), then during the night when everyone is sleeping everything works the way it should!

Just tried with my business email address and it worked fine, maybe they have an issue with gmail accounts, who knows, important thing is I am online and the account is flying! Insane pings! It's like I can almost see into the future in games now!

wut????

lets compare ANYTIME to ANYTIME...not ANYTIME to 3/4 of your data is only available at early hours of the morning.

Okay, let's play the compare game then. Let's compare quality with quality, oh ****, did Afrihost just lose that battle? yup

i'd rather have a WORKING capped account with extra data after hours for big downloads than be able to download very slowly (and buffer constantly) any time of the day

The quality issues are strange...some people have them others dont...thats not what this is about...this is about price....we cant go around throwing around comments like "WA is half the price of afrihost"

it is simply not true.

P.S my afrihost capped account works fine.

Which package to take?

I’m moving from AH, where I have a 50 + 50GB, and a 10Mbps ADSL link. My cancellation takes effect at the end of this month. I’ll be applying later this month with WA. In the meantime, I have identified the 60 + 120GB with a 10Mbps line option from WA. The Home Capped option is R599 and the Business Capped option is R689. I’m not too fussed on the price difference.

My needs are for the family to browse the web / stream you tube / download series, etc. The AH account worked well – other than the recent outages.

Any advice on my options would be great – would the business service provide better performance / consistency?

The business accounts will always out-perform the home when it comes to the overall quality and level of shaping. But like the other guys said you can always upgrade if need be :D

Glad to hear things are sorted now :)

@WebAfrica Helper - does the higher bandwidth priority of the Business accounts extend to NNTP in addition to the various other protocols/services, or is that always on the same "Best effort" ranking across all account types?

Ie. - I understand NNTP is a "Best effort" service - but would it be a BETTER effort on Business capped vs Home capped? :)

Here's some pudding, made just a few minutes ago using WA's news server:

My line is a 4Mbps line, Business Capped. 3.2Mbps is the most I ever get from my line at 50dB attenuation.

Yes.

But since it's capped, there's no reason to move up. Just let your downloads go longer if they are slower.

Must say I'm pretty impressed with WebAfrica right now.

Made the switch to Netflix last week and so far its been impeccable. Quality is excellent (very close to HD) and I don't think I saw a single stutter.

I could see a slight drop in quality yesterday when running 2 Netflix streams while syncing 10+ GB Dropbox account but it was still way superior to DSTV "SD".

And this is all on a 4Mb line. Looking forward to 20Mb.

Only problem is 60Gb daytime is no longer going to be enough ... :p

Anyone else having issues with the business capped account? Mine works for a couple of minutes after restarting my router and then just dies.

Nevermind, seems like Telkom is dead, cant even connect on Telkom Mobile
