I use both the free servers as well as astraweb

During DL+ hours i get full speeds

I never have issues with Astraweb. Are you using SSL on a HTTP port?
WA and IS news servers are the same servers btw.

True, I'm connected to a MSAN with vDSL capability :p

But if your SSL isn't on one of the http ports it'll probably be shaped.

Bastard :p;)

Although, I was referring more to Webafrica's (IS pizza flavour) IPC capacity in said regions which would cause us to have different performance on best effort during peak.

Although, I can concur on the SSL comment. Although I'm not using WA but IC 10mb uncapped, right now, if I download off IS server with nextgen as backup, I can only manage 200KB/s, if I turn off IS server and just use nextgen, I get 600KB/s out of my normal 1.1Mb max speed, so there is still shaping happening on SSL, just probably a more global shaping policy.

Yeah probably. I'm only on 4Mbps so I wouldn't know about anything beyond 400KB/s.

Are the problems isolated to the IS network? If it is, at least you know it's not the exchange that's congested. Ever considered mailing IS to see if they can resolve the issues?

I'm not complaining.

I use a home uncapped star rated account so I expect and am okay with shaping during the day which gets lifted at 5pm on the dot, I'm at work anyway.

Fulton is complaining about WA, not IS, as I can almost guarantee that he can use another IS capped account (not WA but CW or OW even) with exactly the same settings and he'll get vastly better results.

Spot on Wingnut. If I connect with VOX - full speeds.

Right now my WA DL is running at 150 KBs.

I chose the SSL setting in SABNZB but when I tested, it said not working because SSL not allowed on those ports.

My technical skills are low so not sure what you mean on a HTTP port or how to choose that??

Thanks re those two servers

What he meant by "on a HTTP port" is that you cannot enable SSL on port 80 (which is the default port for HTTP protocol). Even if the news server has SSL support on port 80 for you, your ISP may do Layer 7 packet inspection and block SSL connections on that port.

News servers' default unencrypted port is is 119, so you typically can't enable SSL when using that port number either.

I'm on WebAfrica and my SABnzbd servers are as follow:
news.is.co.za:119 (exactly the same as news.wa.co.za:119) with SSL off
ssl-eu.astraweb.com:443 with SSL on (TLS v1)
news.astraweb.com:119 with SSL off

As far as I can tell, Astraweb's SSL support is limited to TLS v1.0 and nothing higher.

Yea, like Pada said, SSL uses different ports. You'll have to ask Astra what they are.

For example, Nextgen uses ports 22, 443, 563, 995 on SSL and 23, 80, 110, 119 on normal non-encryption.

Thank you so much Pada - I really do appreciate the time taken to help me and have now set up the same. I look forward to giving it a test this afternoon.

Once again - thanks so much to you both for your help and input :D

@Pada and wingnut - my first test and 100% line speed on my DL. This looks great - hope this is the start of good things - and all thanks to you guys.

I'm finding quite the opposite in CSGO, my ping is actually decreasing because of heavy packet loss, like >60%!
Cycling the modem seems to help for an hour or 2.

I find myself resetting the modem twice a night :(
And yes I've tried with a different modem. Going to test another account to see if the issue persists.
So I've now tried the WebAfrica trial account that support gave me and also a CrystalWeb 10Mbps capped unshaped account and both behaved the same, where every now and then I have very high latencies.

Now on Axxess my latency was fine, but then suddenly I started to have heavy packet loss even though the latency is low.

I'm really not sure which ISP to go for next.

Aside from this CS:GO lagg issue, I have no issues with WA :(

And I spoke too soon :(

Currently running at 20% line speed on my current test

Like I said, they can still shape SSL, maybe try another port or just buy a R1 afrihost account and cancel it straight away.

Ah OK I wondered if they had caught on to me on that front.

I do have my VOX account too for after hours, so guess I just need to accept it and move on. The annoying thing is that I hardly ever DL during the day! Rant over :)

Right now I am back to 100% line speeds.

So I have a backup DSL account with Web Africa that I want to cancel - so when I click on the "Cancel my service" button, it tells me that I need to call them, but I won't (just out of principle that I don't agree with them making it simple to sign up for an account but difficult to cancel it.) If then need a phone call, they can call me.

So I send a mail on 04/10/2016 at 8pm. Still as of now, no reply.

And so the wait continues...

So still no reply as of this morning, so I went onto live chat and someone assisted me immediately.

- if you ever need help with anything at Web Africa, use live chat and not their ticket system.
