WebAfrica Capped ADSL

So I've now tried the WebAfrica trial account that support gave me and also a CrystalWeb 10Mbps capped unshaped account and both behaved the same, where every now and then I have very high latencies.

Now on Axxess my latency was fine, but then suddenly I started to have heavy packet loss even though the latency is low.

I'm really not sure which ISP to go for next.

Aside from this CS:GO lagg issue, I have no issues with WA :(

I can only think it's the dodgy Telkom ASSIA (AKA: DSMS - dynamic spectrum management system) product they implemented.

Cancelled mine now. At least the lady that I've phoned was really nice and understanding, although I'm not a big fan of having to phone to cancel my account. Anyway only going to happen at the end of Nov.
I'll be saving R100 a month (50%) by moving over to AH with their zero-rated midnight to 6PM data. I'll also get data-rollover which I will find very handy. Oh well, it's been fun WA, have been with you guys forever!

WA best effort for news servers etc is seeing me running ar about 3% line speed.

If this is best effort, it really says heaps about WA and their ability to cope

Capped Business package on WebAfrica slow on my 20MB line

Hi guys,

Anybody else experiencing WebAfrica slowness the entire weekend in Cape Town?

I have a 20MB line but getting speeds I got when I had a 2MB line 10 years ago.

Latency is up and down, speeds fluctuation between 500kb/s to 2 MB/s

I've only used 36% of my cap for the month.

Thanks

Has anyone else's internet been disconnecting randomly for the last 2 weeks or so? Only seems to happen on Web Africa to me. Although someone I asked said their connection went down at the same time as mine and they're with Crystal Web.

Whats the general consensus on WebAfrica capped?

Leaving CrystalWeb (been crap since they decided to compete with Afrihost in price)

I'm looking for an account that gives me my full line speed (20Mb/s) all the time. Usage: Running a business form home, Netflix, Youtube, Gaming, After hours Usenet.

If anyone has been with Telkom or Axxess how does it compare?

I moved back to WA from CW last month, no noticeable difference in performance on my 10Mb/s line but I use the account mainly for streaming in the evenings and torrents in "free" time.

Note that WA have a calendar month cancellation unlike CW where you can cancel before the 19th.

Lestoran, I've been using WebAfrica's 10Mb/s capped ADSL service for more than two years now, and I wouldn't bother switching. I've never had a moment of grief due to WebAfrica themselves: whenever I've needed support adding or cancelling a service they've been very efficient in doing so, and all the automatic billing procedures work like they should (never any 'surprises'). I was with Telkom at the start and had a completely different experience: practically unusable customer portal, extremely unhelpful staff (except when signing up of course) and don't even think about cancelling (unless you want to discover how many circles there are in Hell).

Sadly my experience is different to foxhound.

I have a 10 meg line and there are times everything just goes wonderfully, then not great for a while. My big thing is usenet (I don't generally do any streaming) and the only 98% reliable time for full speed DL's is during DL+ time (00:00 - 06:00). A year or two ago during office hours speeds were slow and then from 17:00, the switch was flicked and it was full speed. That is no longer the case and I have been DL late evening and it has been crawling.

In terms of support - it really depends on who you get and I now just deal with two or three people who I know are clued up.

Maybe if you went with one of their premium offerings it might be better.

For me I would only recommend with reservations.

What about VOX?

Good luck with your move and I hope you are soon happly sorted.

Thanks for the feedback!

If its as good as CrystalWeb used to be I'll be happy indeed.

I've heard some good things about Telkom capped but they're expensive and well, Telkom support - giving that a skip then.

I only DL after hours anyway so if I get line speed or close to it I'll be happy. Been with VOX before and and still on VOX at the office. Not happy with streaming performance and don't like that I often need to refresh web pages for it to load completely. Support is terrible as well.

When you say DL is slow during normal hours do you mean UseNet only or "normal" downloading as well? Being a capped account I would hope thats at least near line speed most of the time.

Know about the calendar month thing - wonder why they do it if they have a good service? If anything if prob prevents some from giving them a test.

One of my big frustrations is that on the very odd occassion that I need to DL from usenet during the draw, most of the time I wouldn't even get 10% line speed (if I was lucky) - bar the odd occassion where it worked well. My argument is that I have a capped account so that I can choose when I want to use it and get good performance. This is not the case and WA says they have a best effort policy.

I did have a business account to test for a few days and during office hours DL's were great and after hours they were terrible - a complete reversal of the home account.

You tube etc generally seems to perform fine for me. The limited normal DL's I have done have generally been fine

Not ideal and agree 100% with you that a capped account should be unshaped and perform close to capacity all the time.

It's something I'll put up with until such time as I find an account that performs the way CrystaWeb used to.

I've been having sketchy packet loss with WA for the past few days. Switched accounts (between a few 1gb free acc's that I have) and seems to have cleared it up for now.

Looking at possibly going to AH since it's the 3rd or so time I've had to switch accounts or reboot the router to get a clear traceroute. Tests on other accounts aren't showing these issues. :/

My Afrihost account is working, but not my WebAfrica account?

So which cable is broken this time?
