So, the other day jnr's mother is rifling through her stuff and finds her stash. Now, jnr has no idea that the old lady found it. Apparently, it is good stuff as well. Child is 16 and has done some stupid stuff in the last few weeks: nose ring, belly ring and now this.

I don't want to over-react but I need input on this subject. What would you do?

You might want to have an open and frank discussion with jnr.

Personally there is nothing wrong with weed, and jnr needs to know that. But there are dangers with it as well.
I would be more worried about the nose ring, belly ring etc.. if they were done without the parents consent, and depending on the school jnr goes to.

Weed is not good for you if you are 16, it's not harmful but it does affect cognitive development. Once all the brain cells are in place at the age of 20 something, you can go nuts on it from what i've read

Smoke it!

I think her mother, being the finder, will probably be the keeper of the reefer.

Thank you. This is where my mind is but I never know if I am too damn liberal. She goes to an upmarket private school in Joburg.

As someone who smoked a lot of cannabis as a teenager, I strongly do not recommend this as suitable behaviour. It is not good for developing cognitive ability.

16 may seem young, but it is not young these days. It is the time most modern kids will experiment with it. That said, you could try and ask her to hold out, for the most part, until she is 18.

As long as she's not abusing it, and knows that her parents are OK with/understanding about occasional use so that she doesn't have to continue doing it behind your backs, it's fine. Rather she knows this, than have to do it in secret and be paranoid about her parents finding out and her being in trouble.

It would be more concerning if she was using alcohol behind your back, because you cannot compare the effects of the two.

It is not a gateway drug. And there is no link between piercings and weed.

What you should rather look out for is how she is performing in school, what the teachers think, if she participates in sport and extra mural activities, her social life is good, etc.

I was in this situation when I was younger. My stepfather at the time was actually looking for an IDE cable, I had the weed stashed in an old hard drive box, so he opened the box looking for the cable, and found the stash instead.

My parents took the open conversation route, and told me it is not good and all that. My mother is not agaisnt weed, so I am not sure how difficult the conversation must have been for her.

All in all, sure, I tried it a couple of times, but got over it, haven't smoked the green since I was 17(which is not really that long ago, only a few years, but still). I suppose that it comes down to the personality of the child.

The problem with weed is not the herb itself. The problem typically the people it is obtained from. Not everyone is a casual dealer and if not, they will put you in touch with more serious stuff.

Anyone under the age of 16 shouldnt smoke because it will stun cognitive development.
This kid is already slightly out of control if she has had rings and such put it, If i was her mother i wouldnt be surprised.Maybe pay more attention to the child so she doesnt feel a need to create attention?

Dunno - she phoned and told me last night but at the time I was blazing so my memory is hazy :D.

Just kidding - I haven't had that discussion with her mother yet.

Well find out first because if it was well hidden and 'mother' was digging through her stuff she will hit you with the 'invasion of privacy' and 'breach of trust' victim defence. It will be used to justify more rebellious behavior. You gotta spin it that you are the victim in this as it's your trust and rules, motivated by what you believe is in her best interests, that have been transgressed.

The only real solution to this is too address the underlying problem which is insecurity. It makes young people vulnerable to peer pressure and rebellion.

Great advice.

Weed is the gateway to hardcore drugs. That's why I'm against teens smoking weeds. They tend to make stupid decisions impulsively.

Well, what you ideally need to get is a broadleaved weed killing spray, apply it 3 weekends in a row and all the weeds will be gone from your paving, be careful not to spray inadvertently on your lawn....

*if I had just read the thread title
