I bought this house that has a lot of paving that was never grouted properly or maintained. The weeds in between the joints are driving me crazy. I tried using cement and plaster sand mixture which worked for a little while but didn't get in properly between the joints and after abt 2 years is coming out. I have seen some articles on using kiln dried sand instead of normal plaster sand. I have seen some places where the paving has some kind of jointing compound that is very hard. No weeds at all grow when this is used. Think it might be Romex from the link below but is quite smooth. Any ideas what is the best stuff to use? It looks like I have to remove all old grout and redo. The Romex stuff is super expensive so any alternatives would help. I would appreciate any ideas at this stage.

Ive read that coarse salt can fix this if you dont want to use a poison...

Salt leaches into the groundand essentially sterilizes it, preventing vegetative re-growth. Spread a thin layer of rock salt between your walkway's bricks, pavers or stones. It will kill any weeds or grass growing there, and keep them away for years. Apply rock salt to cracks and crevices in your pavement or driveway.

Im sure roundup would work think it kills anything
Thanks. I do use roundup. Just not too keen as I read its been linked to cancer. My wife was diagnosed with cancer and want to avoid strong poisons. Am looking more of a permanent fix for the grout not just to kill the weeds

Roundup - Expensive
Hydrocloric Acid (pool acid) - Relatively cheap but hazardous to work with
Swimming pool salt/ Coarse salt - Relatively cheap and effective option.
So I would go for the coarse salt option. Cheap and effective, but you will probably have to do it annually/ biannually to be sure.

Then maybe do the salt and then redo the grouting in between with plastersand and cement. I have a contact for kiln dried silica sand if you want to try that instead.

Find the right cement, speak to builders to find a more cost effective way
The whole weed killer thing never gets the full desired results on paving

I apply round up every year when they come out. Salt makes white markings on the paving. Eventually you will win. Efekto also have a similar thing.

Nope doesn't work

Buy Glyphosate from your local corporation, spray them once a month till they stop coming out.

It's the stuff roundup is made from, but without the added water.

Need to be very careful when using it, it's highly carcinogenic. Pool acid is sometimes a better alternative, it's cheaper than Glyphosate and while one also needs to take care, the results are instantaneous vs waiting 7-10 days for the weeds to die.

No it's not highly carcinogenic, stop reading things like green news or those Mercola crud.
Pool acid can also damage the bricks.
