Weight Loss Thread 2014

Honey sugars are not metabolised very differently and have the same net-effect as sucrose, if not more if we're measuring by weight...

Happy with the turnout. It's different but definitely an excellent substitute, leaving similar satisfaction as bread.

Both the bread and pancakes look good! (Sweet stuff isn't really my thing though). I agree with you about being an excellent substitute, I just had an omelette, and fried two slices of the bread in some bacon fat. Deelish.

I used golden flaxseed.

Snob.

Aaaaarggh... just give the damned recipe already and sell me a loaf of that bladdy bread infernal damnations and blistering blue barnicles.

Try it out.. It's really not difficult to make.

But... I have honey in my kitchen.., I would have to go out and hunt some Xylitol before I can scoff on these later this morning.

Also, methinks honey carbs are OK in moderation also too as well every now and then from time to time :p.

You can have around a tablespoon, but make sure you watch your carb intake throughout the rest of the day.

All these breads and things look delish but I'm too lazy for any of that :p
I'll just put an egg in the boiler and get someone to make me some coffee instead...

Thanks for that... I perhaps have maple syrup once a month and honey perhaps once every 3 months. Have never used Xylitol, but probably will put it on the shopping list now.

Shall be done. Noted. Thanks.

I'm starting to err more towards stevia, xylitol definitely doesn't agree with my stomach :o

Oooh errr... this sounds not good. Methinks some Google-research I must now do.

Yeah, I'm not convinced about the safety of it. Pity, cause it is easily the best alternative to sugar I've ever tasted.

Apparently it's lethal to dogs too, like 2 grams ingested by your pet and it's game over!

Most reviews say it's a perfectly safe and natural alternative to sugar but I'm a little skeptical of it. Let's just say I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years time there is a medical report released linking Xylitol to some or other fatal disease or condition.

Crumbs! Well... maybe I will just make do with honey for now.

Dude, I'm probably just being paranoid...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylitol

Xylitol has no known toxicity in humans. In one study, the participants consumed a diet containing a monthly average of 1.5 kg of xylitol with a maximum daily intake of 430 g with no apparent ill effects. Like most sugar alcohols, it has a laxative effect because sugar alcohols are not fully broken down during digestion; albeit one-tenth the strength of sorbitol.[clarification needed] The effect depends upon the individual. In one study of 13 children, four experienced diarrhea when consuming over 65 grams per day. Studies have reported adaptation occurs after several weeks of consumption.
As with other sugar alcohols, with the exception of erythritol, consumption in excess of one's laxation threshold (the amount of sweetener that can be consumed before abdominal discomfort sets in) can result in temporary gastrointestinal side effects, such as bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea. Adaptation, an increase of the laxation threshold, occurs with regular intake. Xylitol has a lower laxation threshold than some sugar alcohols, but is more easily tolerated than others such as mannitol and sorbitol.

Aaah ... thanks. I have never looked at a sugar substitute ... so this would be new territory for me.

I have just done without it, well, without as in not using any refined sugar consciously although it is present in a lot of the foodstuffs consumed in one or another form.

Xylitol is sounding quite awesome from those links ... I had never heard of it before.

Ye the one thing that has me using Xylitol over Stevia is that aftertaste ...... yech!

I have cut out all sweetener and sugar, but I do still have one teaspoon of honey in my evening mug of Chai Rooibos.
The one teaspoon of honey is over 8 grams of carbs... so I might be stopping in somewhere to get some Xylitol :)

Woke up with craps in my calves again this morning :(
And today it feels like I almost drowned in the ocean (I'm still in JHB). I have this gawd-awful salt taste in my mouth...
Question - does ones body ever settle down once adjusted to a keto diet, and stop leaching minerals from the body?

Hey guys, to those Banting or on Paleo diet. Need some input here. I make the nut muesli with full cream Greek yogurt and 2 boiled eggs for breakfast. I have this every day during the week, and on weekend I have a salmon and cream cheese omlette to vary it up a little.

The muesli and boiled eggs are quick to organise in the morning as time is an issue etc, so I need something I can have quickly and takes little prep time. But...I am really get tired of the same thing now...especially the eggs :(

What else are you guys doing for breakfasts?
