Western Cape speed camera system update

Wait did they say the road between Beaufort West to Three Sisters is dangerous. Its the most boring road in the country, ok second most as the most boring is the road between Upington and Calvinia.

That's why it's dangerous...because it's boring.

So people speed because it seems easy and will get them there faster. On the flip side people fall asleep and the two don't combine well.

Not sure how you could confuse them? One's a box on a robot pole at an intersection, the other is a gantry over a freeway?

This system is incorporated with the Audio Tactile Pedestrian Detectors.

Pedestrian user-friendly intelligent crossings use infra-red cameras to alert drivers to slow-moving pedestrians, and also reduce the period before a light turns green once people have crossed.

I was searching to post a pic, but couldn't get a relevant article (with picture) on the implementation. The cameras are identical in look. Yes, these are mounted on robot poles.

Hmm OK yeah I get what you're saying, but avg speed cameras are deployed over freeways, so they can't really be confused. Although around where I stay they need ATDP on freeways, every year 2 or 3 guys are knocked down running across them :)

For those who sit watching the speed limit, my TomTom knows where they speed cameras start and it measures your average speed and lets you know when you're over the average. More relaxing driving that way and not having to worry if you went over the limit.

Off topic: now I want a TomTom

Do these work at night? I don't see much IR lighting around them, or do they light up the area like the e-toll gantries?

And still 3 out of every 4 cars slows to a crawl as they pass the camera thinking that it is the traditional fixed type that flashes and then speeds back up again after passing it.
If they really wanted these systems to work better they would put a whole lot more effort into educating the motoring public as to how they work.

If they were to educate the people about this that would eat into their revenue collection from the fines

People are stubborn/ignorant/stupid and even on here miss a lot of obvious things.

There are people still on R2.60 per minute Vodacom4less prepaid price plans. There are people here that don't put the forum on widescreen mode so as not to see ads on the side and then complain about the ads on the side. There are people who drive with their rear fogs lights on, having no idea why they do it, and members here who also don't know its illegal.

There are people who will not know who Omar al-Bashir is, despite so much news coverage being applied.

People have to think for themselves, and if they are dom, they must voel. And stupid people have always affected smarter peoples experience of life, looking at you there ANC.

TBH, I have not noticed this behaviour, most people are fully aware of how average speed cameras work in kzn, and the ones who aren't are thick as pig shyte and couldn't be taught anyway.

You should try driving past the camera at cedara on the n3. Sometimes I end up having to slow down to around 85/90kph because everyone in front of me is climbing on the brakes.

Yeah I get that all the time too, dumbasses - there are even signs up saying "average speed prosecution" >.<

I'm all for these systems if you ask me...

It, to a degree, lessens the profit motive in terms of having a single trap in a place where the speed changes suddenly or is out of step with the size of the road.

Its the devil you know.

I agree.... also everyone just seems to drive better. Not stupidly slow or overly fast.

My personal favourite was a guy in a Golf GTI who slowed down for the first camera, then drove like a maniac through the average speed zone and then I saw his brake lights coming on in the distance just before the second camera. Seems someone failed maths at school...

If you are on that road at sunset during December, the sun sets right in front of you, cars seem to come out of the sun. Its the most terrifying thing.
That is the day I learnt to put my headlights on at sunset. Its the only way for other cars to see you.
