As is every single other car too, thanks to our currency devaluing 50% in five years. Show me a new car these days that still feels 'good value for money'.
 
The Koreans are notorious for the "huge price jump" in every new model. Case in point is the Tucson.Model for model its more expensive than other "brand name" options. I'm talking Kuga; CashCow; CX-5 etc. Read many independent reviews and these options are still better & now relativly cheaper.

I foresee the new Sportage to priced above main competitors as well.

In real terms car pricing has increased massively (+R40 000 in around four years), regardless of manufacturer. There's a reason that national sales figures are slumping, and it's not because South Africans have all collectively decided they're not interested in buying cars anymore.

I did give examples in my earlier reply.

No one is disputing that new car prices are not crazy. The "sticking point" is that the Koreans brands in particular are pricing themselves *more* than the established players ie. Pricing themselves out the market.

Tuscon; that Volester Turbo; f/lift Sante Fe; Rio etc.
 
FiestaST, I think there's some confusion about your persistent focus on the Koreans, when I was referencing from the start that this is something hitting every single new car. Cases in point: Chevrolet Sonic, Honda Jazz, Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris have all shifted into completely new price brackets from where they were only a few years ago ... not Korean, although all still supposed to be 'affordable' city runarounds, but now retailing well north of R200 000 (heck, even the humble Ford Figo has a variant in this league).

I think the average car buyer has to just wonder where it's going to end, while motor manufacturers persist in leaving out every conceivable 'luxury' that European counterparts have just to slash the price a bit. Now we're supposed to be excited about substitutes like the Datsun Go, Toyota Etios and Honda Brio? It's a crying shame for anybody who loves cars.
 
I forgot the to ask the dealer to take the car for an inspection to make sure the car has not been in any accident. What do I ask of him, an AA Inspection?

Was anyone listening to 702 this morning? I was told there was advert from one of the Mercedes dealerships in gauteng saying they are having a special.
 
this is just a suggestion - but go check it out anyway - they are awesome SUV's...

Renault Duster DCi 2x4 - i'm no renault fan - but this thing won me over - i will buy one tomorrow if i have the cash!

The new ones all have speed control as std

Seriously just go drive one!

Dude, as Fiesta is saying, we know new car prices are up. That is a given. Everyone knows that and there is nothing you can do about it. Be glad you are not from the Seychelles. They get taxed 200% on new car imports. You should see the ridiculous prices that side.

However, to use a couple of examples. The Tucson starts from R359k and the Kuga from R363k. i20 starts from R216k and a Fiesta from R219k... To me, this is a massive problem. Why are people still buying these Korean cars? Don't tell me the warranty. They wiggle their way out of a lot of warranty repairs and their parts are actually quite expensive.

Don't even compare Sante Fe pricing versus rivals & the Volester Turbo vs its peers...
 
I also think it's unfair to pick on the Koreans for incrementally increasing the price and spec of their cars through the generations.
Please compare a Golf 1 to a Golf 7...

That is not what I'm doing... Are you happy to buy a Korean car at almost exactly the same price as a VW or Ford rival? Actually marginally more expensive than a Toyota in the mid range SUV segment, that I used as an example above. RAV4 starts at R351k. They all now have virtually the same kind of standard spec. Quality is not the same however.

Yeah I'd buy a Kia before a Ford. VW, maybe not, as I have great contacts for after-sales service which is really what it's all about.
Owned a couple of Kias and have been impressed by their quality.

Quality in my experience has little to do with the brand, and everything to do with where a vehicle is made, and which price bracket it's made for (Honda Brio/Toyota Etios - double whammy). I don't get why people are hung up on Kia being Korean ... these must be the same sort of people who scorned Toyota for being Japanese in the 1960's, and then a few decades later decided that Toyota was the best thing since sliced bread. Kia has come a long way, so I don't see why they can't charge the same as Ford for similar specced vehicles (and you'll often find they're specced even better).

if what you say is true , then its easy to figure out how long a car will last you then?
I mean you look at where its built and take it from there?

so what would our local cars built in SA be? and those actually made in the US, even though they say Honda/BMW on them.....

people buy the brand, not the country of origin.....
