What car to get?

Okay, I'm no where near a petrol head as all you guys.
But I thought a turbo would be able to give me more fuel efficiency by being able to give me that "boost" when taking off or over taking without using much petrol when I put my foot down. So feel free to tell me what I'm wrong about.

On another note, I went to Audi Bruma and there was nothing in particular which grabbed my interest. So I asked the sales guy if there is anything in his pool, that's when it went down. I told the sales guy what I'm looking at price wise & that my finances are sorted, all he kept asking was for my payslips & other information so he could draw up finances & then find a car which was suitable. I just thought that was horrible cause first off I've heard many of these of the finances some places draw are shady cause they add stuff & you end up paying a higher interest rate. Secondly I need to find a car to fall in love with first, then financial stuff can be sorted. But the guy was admit that I should give my financial information first, so I left.

Hoping to go by BMW Bruma tomorrow after work to see if there is anything that catches my eyes.

BTW, a super charged car is fine as well not just turbo

Drive a 120i, then drive a 120d. The torque that you get at 2000rpm in a diesel will be much more valuable during daily driving than a few extra kW at 6000rpm.

After owning a diesel for 6 years, it will take a real bargain for me to switch back to petrol.

Seems like the obvious choice to me also, you're getting an a4 class car for the price of an a3.

You're probably driving it faster especially acceleration because it's there.Are they the same gearboxes?

But for the discussions here power for power turbo/supercharger (just too long to type that also:)) is more efficient.. You are correct

Polo GTI 1.4 TFSI... Perfect example of this. Fuel economy is quoted I recall being less than the 1.4 base polo... Someone have a polo gti can verify this.

I don't know if it's lighter than the 1.4 base, but it certainly is very light. Under normal driving of course. 700+ km on a tank.

Completely different engines with completely different power output.

How can you even remotely compare them? Similar capacity means nothing in this equation.

It's like cooking the books.

Turbo only works from certain revs depending on car. Usually upwards of 2500rpm as it requires exhaust gas to spin up.





Assuming we are above this rev range in theory for the same throttle opening on two different cars of the same capacity you would use more fuel as the turbo "compresses" more fuel and air into the chamber.





However you would be making more power for the same engine capacity and therefore getting more for the fuel burnt so it's more efficient for given output.





So essentially you'll get more power per litre of fuel. But not necessarily use less litres.



There are however a million variables and its ultimately a silly way to go about it.



Fact of the matter is a 1.4 Turbo will more than likely be heavier on juice than a 1.4 NA, but its a silly comparison as based on power it will be equal to a 3.0 V6 and be more efficient than that.

At the sam time that 1.4 will be at its heaviest on fuel to produce it's 65kw consistently, where the 1.4T will be coasting alone to produce the same 65kw and be more economical doing so. However because it has more power it will driven harder and be less economical again.

I only had a moan as I had a whole post prepared telling you how ridiculously wrong you are about fuel injection...only to realize you meant forced induction.
 
Went to BMW Bruma today & didn't find quite what I was looking for. So the search continues.

One manufacturer I have considered yet is VW. That's cause of it's hi-jackable status.
But I'm kinda considering it now.

I could go for the higher range Polo or Golf, but I'm not to familiar with VW's range.
To me the Golf & Polo have a similar look, why would one go for another and what should I look out for in a VW?
The one down side I've seen with VW is that it has a 3 year/45000km service plan. So in this case why not just go for a Mazda 3 year unlimited milage plan? For reference I do about 18000-20000km's per year.
 
Seriously consider Mazda then, great cars and these days they are good lookers inside and out. Have you given one within your budget a test drive yet?

Any reason you're limiting yourself to the agents only?Some of the bigger second hand dealerships like Fouche motors etc have great cars and mostly at better prices than the dealerships.

For example my cousin bought a 2014/2015 328i with 16000k on the clock from them for r400k which I doubt you'd find at the agents and motorplan is still intact.

I wanted to head off to North Cliff Exclusive as they had a nice range of cars online, but I called them and there was no answer.
Not sure what other good second hand dealers I should go see.

Not 100% sure but from my experience it's definitely not terrible, ie it's not one of those car brands that tanks value.

I'm not sure where is decent in JHB as we have plenty decent ones here in the Vaal,I know S4 auto in the east is decent we once bought a Merc from them and here's two in the south that should have something,give them a call as they both have more than one showroom and more than what's on their websites.

Its about 30-45 min drive from JHB but I mean you're buying a car so not far at all.

Does OP have something against them? They're safe, good looking and from the late 2014 model they have a proper touch screen media interface. Only problem I could see is the small seats in the back.
