What do you feed your dog?

Used to feed my dog Hills but switched over to Royal Canin, he's a labrador so i don't want to take the risk of any issues, besides he's well worth the money :)
 
Christians. Jehovah's Witnesses get delivered right to the door. Dog gets some exercise chasing them around the yard too.

Some supermarket food is cheap rubbish, both for humans and animals. We definitely see a difference when feeding our animals quality food as opposed to the cheapest pet food available. But they don't necessarily need a particularly fancy food and you don't have to buy those 'vet' varieties at a vet. You can feed them rice and meat for instance.
 
I buy pellets from the farmer's market store down the road. Cant remember what dog food we use now is called, but one of them we had was called Jock.

Our dogs seem very healthly on the food with good coats and everything and costs under R250 for 25 kg bag

The usual... small portion of dog chunks, leftovers and whoever want's too take the chance of jumping over the wall :) (the last meal, usually keeps them sated until the next victem, sorry "meal" jumps!)

My German Shepherds can eat a truck :) don't think they ever get full
 
We switch between nutriphase and pedigree. They get tired of one and love the other again. We also mix in some rice/chicken now and then. No other "human food" and we always get complimented on their condition. Bob Martin a day keeps the vet away. ;)

+1 For Ultradog. Find it the best balance between quality and price. Have two pedigreed Rotties, a white Shepherd and a large pavement special. They polish off a 50kg bag in about 3 weeks if I mix in left-overs. Science Diet, Eukanuba and all those expensive brands are a complete waste of money.

Vets are not animal nutritionists. They are paid to promote that crap. Your own Doctor would tell you to eat healthy but you would go to a nutritionist for more detail. Look at the ingredients and list the first four in order. They have to list them in the order they occur most in the feed. Corn? in the top 2? Gluten? And they have the cheek to call it premium!

It's a quarter to seven at night - get up and check...

Over and above the food, my dogs also get two biscuits and a vitamin pill every night...

Dogs were designed to eat meat (carnivores). wtf are you all feeding them rice?

I can see the point of dogfood, which kind-of fakes the protein or bone, but a starch like rice can't be good.

Had mongrels and used to feed them "off the shelf" dog food. All lived 15+ years. Then got pedigree dogs and felt I had to feed them fancy food from the vet. Started to initially but now I just feed them Dogmor which they actually prefer as well as some pap and "human food".
 
lol. I thought reviving a 3+ year old thread would have had a little more meat to it... haha pardon the pun!

needless to say... everyone here made good points, including Bartlomiej.

I think at the end of the day, in my opinion, it comes down to what agrees with your little pooch, what is affordable, and what is best.

Personally, we've recently been through pretty much all of the foods trying to find one that agrees with out two (now three). They were on Hills a while back, then moved them to Montego Karoo because of the higher Glucosamine and Chondroitin content... that started not agreeing with them, so we moved on, Eukanuba, Science Plan, Pedigree, Royal Canin and even Orijen at close on to R900 per bag... Nothing was working... until Vondi's.

It is scientifically prepared natural food made from meat (chicken, ostrich or beef) with rice and veggies with no artificial stuff in it. The hounds love it. They have never been more active or healthier. Their coat is shiny and they are completely loving it. The only downside is that it works out to around R11 per bag, and we use around 3 a day. But, like one of the other poster mentioned, they are worth it. For us, the hounds are part of the family. They get nothing else except their food and healthy treats every night. You wouldn't risk feeding your human child something that contains ingredients you are unsure of? Thats just my opinion...

On a side note, Biogen has a Glucosamine and Chondroitin tablet that I would recommend giving to dogs, especially active larger ones. It helps with the regeneration of muscle & tissue in the joints and works wonders. Came recommended by out vet who suggested it as a cheaper and better alternative to the other products that they sold.
 
Our dogs have what we eat for supper as well as their dog food and also extra gravy.
 
We swapped from Pedigree to Bob Tail. +-R100 a bag cheaper.

The dogs eat like there is no tomorrow ...
