What do you feed your dog?

Check my post on the previous page. Loads of options. Depends on your approach/budget etc.
We keep a bag for emergencies and very rare occasions. But its not the staple.
 
I used to feed pooch Bobtail, but he ultimately almost completely stopped eating. When he did, he regurgitated...
After trying Pedigree and Royal Canin, it seemed he settled on Dr Heinz.

He now cleans his bowl at mealtimes and has a nice shiny coat, so all seems well :)
 
Bobtail. Chicken and Beef. Alternate the flavours each day. Only stuff that doesn't give them a runny stomach (watery liquid poo). Tried ALL the rest. Only bobtail gives stiff solid poo.

Rottweilers. No scraps except for the odd slice of brown bread as a treat.

How odd

When you try other foods do you slowly ween them onto it or just change foods?

Yes. The 8Kg bag of pellets.

How does one slowly ween them onto it? I buy a 8/7/6kg bag of the other stuff and start giving it to them. Then immediately poo is runny and loose. Stays that way until bag of other food is finished (1-2 weeks). Then, back to the tried and tested Bobtail. Poo is IMMEDIATELY better. I pick up my dogs poo every single day. Good way to check overall health of dogs. So yes, I am somewhat of an expert on my dogs poo. Have been picking it up every day for over 7 years now.

Bobtail provides the best poo.
 
No, you need to start with 50/50 for a few days and then change to the new chunks.

I have picked up my dogs poo for over 20 years so I am betterer than you at this.

Never said I was better than anybody. I simply know what works for my dogs. Have you been picking up my dogs poo for 20 years? No.

My dogs are healthy and have the most beautiful coat of fur of any Rottweiler I have ever seen. Vet says so too, despite wanting to coerce me into trying the R600 a bag stuff she sells (which I have tried numerous times without success).

Surely the 50/50 thing could work yes and could be the cause of runny poo for the first few days. But after 1-2 weeks of getting the other food, surely there should be an improvement in the poo which there wasn't. And the improvement in poo is immediate (within a day all is back to normal) when I switch back to bobtail.
 
Sorry, that betterer comment was a joke.

I have Rotties as well and I guess for me it comes down to knowing how crap Bobtail is.
I prefer to feed my dogs quality food.

Not really trying to debate that either considering the truth about Bobtail is pretty glaring.
It is however your choice to feed your dogs whichever food your prefer.

Cool. Keep feeding your dogs the quality stuff. Will keep feeding mine the crap. 7 years and not a single ailment is not a bad track record. Will see how long my luck lasts.
 
Don't get me wrong, I don't feed my dogs Eukanuba or similar anymore as it's a waste imo.
But Bobtail is really the bottom of the dog food chart.

Personally it comes down to knowing what is in the food.

May I ask, what is in bobtail that makes it the bottom? And what is in the food you give that makes it quality?

And if Bobtail is really that bad, wouldn't it show in the dogs as that is ALL they eat. As mentioned, I don't give other food except the odd slice of brown bread as a treat (maybe 1 slice a week).

Most of the cheap brands contain ash, bone, animal waste products like bone, hair and feathers.

I feed my Jack Russell Royal Canin at R126 per 1.5kg. It's expensive, but at least he's healthy and doesn't ***** all over the place.

Variations of the following:

Tin food + pellets (various brands)
Pilchards + pellets
Pellets + milk
Rice + tin food
Samp + tin food
Random leftovers - pretty much anything (they won't eat what they don't like)
Chicken entrails, skins etc. + pellets/rice/samp
Bone meal + pellets/rice/samp
Mince + pellets/rice/samp

As treats we often get them sawed bones. Sometimes coffee in the mornings. An odd sweet/chocolate here and there for the one with a sweet tooth and biltong for the other(s).

A dog's life . . .

I used to feed my dog Pedigree dog food and he pooped a lot.

Now that he's getting decent food, he doesn't poop as much. I'd say that is a clear indication that most of the ingredients in the cheaper brands aren't nutritious and thus gets pooped out.

Just to add, my dog only eats dog food. I never give him anything from the table.
