What do you feed your dog?

Just to add, my dog only eats dog food. I never give him anything from the table.

That's the way to do it.

Some people are far too inclined to treat their pets as people - and while this is generally done with the best intentions - it can be bad for the animal...

and grapes

Not sure I've given them grapes before. What about apples and other fruit?

Dogs don't have a sweet tooth, wtf.
And you give them chocolate?

Oh wow, some ppl.

Yeah it's weird - the one does have a sweet tooth. She eats anything sweet really. She will sit with a lollipop stick between her paws and lick it like a human. The others don't.

EDIT: And the one likes beer (which is poisonous for him) and the other(s) don't. It's crazy I tell you, it's like they have their own personalities and tastes.

You do know chocolate is poisonous for dogs?

How long would it take to kill them?

You should core the apples before you give it to them. Apple seeds are apparently toxic - see list on link above

Hmmm... they must have read that article themselves. They don't usually eat the core & seeds. Bloody clever dogs I have!

Dunno but labradors are pretty resilient, not that I feed it to them but they're expert sneak thieves :)

Oh ok. Well the big ones are about 6 years + now and the little one is about 3 now. Was just checking how much longer I can expect them to be around.

My dog should have been dead already. I honestly have issues with articles like these. How has the dog species survived thus far without owners stopping them from eating all these "no-no" foods?

Yeah I find it quite amazing too.

The simple fact is that you get many different breeds of dogs and the different "no-no" foods will affect them differently.

Articles like that are general rules of thumb as to what you ideally should and shouldn't be feeding your dog.

And if you actually read the article you will see that not all items on the list will lead to instant death - but can contribute towards your dog feeling ill.

I've got my doubts as well given the length of our relationship with them.

So, far from a benign human adopting a wolf puppy, it is more likely that a population of wolves adopted us. As the advantages of dog ownership became clear, we were as strongly affected by our relationship with them as they have been by their relationship with us. Dogs may even have been the catalyst for our civilization.

... wouldn't be surprised if it was a dog that invented the tin opener :D

Nice :D Our dogs aren't pets. They're part of the family :/

Assuming you have kids, I don't know if you do, - would you willing feed them something that is potentially lethal?

You say your dogs are your family but you are happy to willingly but their health at risk.

How does that work?

I do have kids. Might have given the one too much sugar the other day - heard that's not good. It's very, very complicated, Necropolis. I simply can't explain it to you. You keep following your lists of what to do and not to do with your dogs (I'm sure they appreciate it) and I'll worry about mine :)

You should take a trip around some informal settlements and see what the dogs there survive on. You might just be surprised that some of them have never eaten dog food. Ever! And yet there they are, surviving. It's amazing I tell you.

Seriously? Those dogs are so sick and often have to have their teeth removed from the bad diets, with a life expectancy half a healthy dogs.

You look after dogs from informal settlements?

Well if it's good enough for squatter camp dog then it must be good enough for yours!

Feeding your dog chocolate is tantamount to animal abuse in my opinion - and you shouldn't be allowed to look after one if you think that doing so is fine.
