I don't have an iPad. It's just too big for me. I like compact stuff. But I see it has a lot of great uses. Perhaps I must procure it.

For people like, there is the 7.9" iPad Mini, which fits in one hand. Has all the features of a normal iPad, just smaller. It's had some very good reviews, besides the one big one of no Retina display. But if you've never used a Retina display, it's not going to affect you.

No retina is a big big deal for me. I've been totally spoiled by retina display on the iPad. I can't even look at MrsC's ipad2 anymore :/

Yeah, no retina is a big deal for some. For me, personally it doesn't matter. I have an iPad 2 (No retina ) and an iphone 4s which has retina - but since the screen is so small, it makes little difference.

I doubt it will be that noticable and TBH I'd take an even lower iPad mini over this POS nexus 7.

Even John Gruber switched to the iPad Mini and left the iPad4 aside. It's a perfect size for me actually I just can't get past the lack of retina. I understand completely why they left it out though, the engineering would have been pretty difficult for now. My next tablet will be a retina iPad Mini
I'd take the Mini over the Nexus but I think it will be quite noticeable for me. I read on my iPad for hours every day and every time I look at the thing I'm surprised at how sharp the text is. That's really all I care about.

Now THAT is a very good idea - I keep forgetting you can download it on itunes via one's pc and then transfer it to the ipad. I hate that I can't do that on Android :/You can always get a jump start on things and start downloading apps now via itunes. That way you need not miss any special offers.

I used to think the same - maybe consider getting an ipad mini?

The iPad Mini is great! I have one and you will be suprised how great the screen looks.. Dont get me wrong, Retina is way better - but you will have to have them side by side to actually see a "noticeable" difference.
In my opinion, I would take an iPad mini over a normal iPad

Waiting on the 2nd generation iPad mini with retina display and A6X processor. Retina is hard to live without. It's like comparing SDTV to HDTV. Having said that I find the iPad2 a little more nimble than the retina resource intensive iPad3.
I read the first two pages with interest (gave up after two pages) as it seems to confirm what I had always thought... a tablet is not a particularly useful device. I do all of that stuff with my laptop but then my laptop is also a necessity for work purposes. If I need mobility my phone can do all those things too.
Not to bash tablets unnecessarily but it seems many of those lists were dramatically expanded to make them appear more useful. In the good old days you would have listed browsing the web as one entry, now it has expanded to surf the internet, browse Facebook, check reddit, banking etc etc
In saying all of this, I will probably be a typical consumer and fall for the whole FOMO and get a tablet. I will not get an overpriced iPad or Samsung though and will rather feed that desire to conform with a cheap tablet.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Coupled with a bluetooth keyboard/mouse (or without) a tablet remains an incredibly useful tool.
For me the portability factor means I can take it with me where ever I go. The toilet, to work, to lunch, to meetings. Add to that 10 hour battery life and its longevity between chargers is particularly convenient.
The only feature missing is true multi tasking, however a jailbroken iPad running Quasar over comes this deficiency.
I won't bore you with a list of uses but I'll leave you with a short video demonstrating Quasar.
Cost is prohibitive, I will agree. You can get a decently specced laptop for about the same price as your top end tablets.
Be careful of cheap tablets. Remember interacting with a device through touch can become a very unfulfilling experience if said device doesn't respond with accuracy, fluidity and precision. The cheaper one's might not excel in these departments. Look 2nd hand.

Don't think a day has gone by that I haven't used my iPad for something since I got it a few months back. Using it right now to type this on the couch - much easier to whip the the iPad out than a laptop.
