What do you use your ipad for?

Yip, they hold value reasonably well. About 4 months ago I sold my 12 month old, heavily used, iPad2 16gb wifi for R3k. I bought it at launch for R4k.

Then about 2 months ago I got tired of sharing my iPad3 with the rest of the family so I got a 4 month old iPad2 16gb wifi off Gumtree for R2.7k.

It does the same things as a laptop yes. But given a choice I'll take the iPad and ditch the laptop until I get into work. iPad does the same things just ... nicer. Reading on iPad vs a laptop is incomparably better - I wouldn't even consider reading on a laptop; it's also better than reading on a smartphone due to the real estate difference. Gaming on the iPad is also better than a laptop because of the selection of games - although I have a dedicated gaming PC for bigger scale games, a laptop just doesn't work for gaming. GPS'ing, general surfing and Facebooking, researching, cookbooking is just more pleasant.

It's the immediacy of the experience, the touchscreen full-size screen navigation, the speed and selection of apps. But of course you're right - equivalents for all those things exist on the laptop. Just don't imagine it's not useful simply because you've never used one. And don't compromise on a cheaper tablet just because you don't want to conform - the quality of the screen, the speed, and the build quality are more important on a tablet than they are on a laptop from my experience; it's directly proportional to how much you'll end up using it.

You will find that most of us have laptops too... but at work for example being able to scribble my notes on the ipad screen directly, have reference documents without effort, recording minutes, etc is way better than lugging the dell around. Unless you sit in one place all day where you work in which case a laptop or even desktop could do just the same things.
 
Best remote access app I have used is called Remoter VNC. Costs quite a bit as you can buy separate functionality, but damn it has everything and it all works very well. Having both VNC over SSH and RDP over SSH is awesome.
