What is "expensive" biltong wise?

Personally I think anything under R200 is still a decent price.
R200 to R250 is normal.
Over R250 - you are being ripped off.

Meat World still has biltong on special for R140 on some weekends.

Depends what biltong hey

The price varies in line with the dryness of the biltong. If the biltong is wet then it takes less meat to make a kg of biltong. Remember a kilo's worth of wet meat only turns into something like 700 grams of biltong as the drying process reduces a great deal of the biltong's mass.

In my experience the dealers who sell for under 200 bucks a kilo takes some serious 'kortpaaie' that I don't want to support. Pay your 250 - 300 bucks a kilo and then you are reasonably assured that A grade meat went into the biltong and that is properly dried. Too wet biltong is terrible.

Meh, I actually prefer Meat World biltong over a lot of the stuff you get at Pick and Pay and Woolworths.
It tastes better and looks better.

Where is this meat world?

I hate buying biltong and droëwors from pick N pay.

Fck I buy 5Kg droëwors a week ey and theres is a hit and miss everytime.

I miss the days I lived in Eros

Paid R170 for just about the best you can get, but it's obviously a private seller.

Eish !

No one knows how to make biltong without a biltong maker? really! Where have all the okes that knows things gone!

I use my grandmother's recipe as modified by my mom , all of us grew up on a farm. ( No don't ask, recipe is not for sale at any price).
One tip, we soak the meat in the special mixture, turn it daily and only hang it when it tastes right. and yes we do use vinegar!

Hooks, What the hell has happened to a roll of bloudraad and a tang? Make your own hooks!
Rack, I have a really good rack in the garage, can hang 200 Kg of wet meat on it.
Make in bulk in winter and then vacuum pack and freeze it! What is this BS about needing a biltong maker, electricity and all that?

Clearly, we are losing the art of survival without modern aids. Problem is no one wants to actually do the harvesting anymore either (Hunting).

Also a biltong maker is a lamp and a fan, hardly any electricity.

The device you are posting from uses more.

lol I think if you go around the majority of guys 20-40, few of them will know what bloudraad is, even pliers.
My parents made biltong to sell way back in 1985, hung the stuff in the garage. thing is most people don't have the space. So they have to resort to biltong makers. For the real guys, Popular mechanics had a DIY biltong maker project.
Easy... http://www.popularmechanics.co.za/home-how-to/diy-projects/make-your-own-biltong-dryer-in-an-afternoon/

There are a bunch of meat world butcheries up in Joburg.

Not sure if there are any down your neck of the woods though...

I agree regarding people forgetting how to make biltong

Make the short drive to Die Vleis Winkel in Brackenfell. Best biltong and droewors in the Cape IMO. I think their biltong is R185/kg. It is amazingly good and you can pick and choose between dry and wet.

I prefer wet...like most men should.

wtf are you on about?

this fancy biltong maker you are referring to is just some plastic with a light bulb and a fan... it does absolutely fukk all other than provide a place to hang the meat

Yep and for those of us in durbs, we have to use some type of dehumidifier or all you will have is rotting meat.

Send me some direction? God dammit 185/Kg I will buy a fck load.

How long can biltong last just out of curiosity I normally eat it within a matter of days but would like to buy in bulk at that price. 10 odd kilos
