What is "expensive" biltong wise?

Also thinking of getting a biltong maker. Its just ridicikous going from say R100/kg for meat to R200/kg+ for biltong.
And add these Biltong Dens/Huts all over the place. You have to pay for their rent, salaries etc. Can't believe someone goes into that.
Nice little scheme to get someone's pension from them.

firstly, if you get a biltong maker and you buy raw meat for R100/kg, you are paying too much.
secondly, again, if you are buying biltong at a fukking biltong shop, you deserved to be ripped off.... because you are a moron
thirdly, it is quite rare to find good and decent biltong, and at a decent price, at a place like Pick 'n Pay/Spar/Checkers/whatever...
lastly, find a blerrie butcher, and buy your biltong from there... you will not find it cheaper and off better quality. try and avoid franchise butcheries, like meat world

i guess i'm lucky. in kempton park, and we have butchers around every corner...

is it just me, or are butchers in other areas not as common as in mine?

In Kempton Park alone I can think off
- Kempton Supermeat (best dry wors and cabanossi)
- Karee Slaghuis
- Palm Slaghuis
- Vleis Fabriek
- Edleen slaghuis
- Modderhill slaghuis

All of them within 5km from my house.

You are lucky..

Independent butcheries are a dying breed in this country.

I realised this when i worked in Sandton, and couldn't find a butchery anywhere near... I was thinking "where the fukk do people buy their meat" and just to imagine always going to a place like pick 'n pay made my stomach churn.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Realistically you're going to lose close to 50% of the weight of the meat turning it into biltong, perhaps more depending on how dry you like it, so you're still going to be paying R200+ per kg of biltong if your meat prices are that high to begin with.

That said you shouldnt be paying R100/kg for beef. R60-80/kg is probably closer to the mark.

Currently you shouldn't be paying more than around R75 per kg for silverside... if you do, you might just as well buy biltong ready made from wherever

I know - I was adding it to my post as you were posting. :)

cHECKERS/Pick&pay, tried that...not very nice.
I don't buy from Biltong den/huit etc. those little shops... NOOOOOOO. Took the 100/kg as a estimate. Don't have a biltong maker yet but was looking to get one. Will need to investigate the whole process and business and whats and wheres and hows of making my own biltong.

Theres also a few close also 5 -8 km , Vleispot, Witpoortjie, Big 5, and 3 more whose names I don't know.

All i can say is NEVER buy biltong from duty free at OR Thambo (this should be obvious). R480 per kg... i died a little on the inside when i saw the price... and its just for standard packaged billies, not even fresh. urgh.

I think the closest we get to a franchised butchery here in the Vaal Triangle is Fruit Lovers Market in Vanderbijlpark. I might be mistaken though, but all of the others we frequent is independent.

There is a Meat World in Northcliff.
Probably your best bet.

Haven't actually checked but I'm not convinced its much cheaper after factoring in biltong maker, meat & electricity prices. Plus I don't have somewhere to put it where it won't stink up the place.

Mostly settled for simply not eating Biltong. Blasphemy I know.

If you're living in a country like UK where importing it is illegal making it might be your only option… apart from abstinence that is. :o

I think you can buy it in some of the South African speciality shops.

Wonder what their prices are like? I buy a fair amount of stuff here from the UK speciality shop in PE and they certainly charge a premium. :o

lulz, that's the one I went to... ok, they aren't bad, but not good to the standard I'm used to Kempton Park.

once bought their babelas biltong, sweet lord baby jesus....

The Meat World at K90 is brilliant. I only buy their babelas mix. Also, they usually have a special on regular biltong on the first saturday of the month.
