Broadband is marketed as a "nice to have". Perhaps if Telkom can swap their family-orientated CLOSER advert to something like 348k-3Gig all inclusive for R300, more people will listen.
Then again, if Caltex sees logic in marketing their 'Techron' petrol with a nice family car-wash commercial (go figure?), Telkom obviously has permission to make and advert of families and friend having a good time because they have Telkom CLOSER...and CLOSER even has its own Jingle!

I tell you what it is. Greed, greed and more greed. Plainly obvious isnt it!! 
They adopt a "all that matters is the bottom line" philosophy. Bottom line being profit, and no matter if the world is ending tomorrow they still want their good profit. Telkom top management are all PRICKS!!!
Oh and not to mention lazyness. They would rather sit and do nothing and earn billions than actually do something good for the country and its people and earn more billions.

What's holding broadband back? It starts with "Tel" and ends in "kom". Cryptic neh?
I still kinda hope and pray that Telkom will realise how much more money they could be making if they were providing decent service at low rates to ten times the volume of users.

If I was running Telkom, I would do exactly the same. Telkom operates in a framework created by Government (DoC). If this framework grants me exclusive rights over SAT3, local loop etc. I will use it (and abuse it) for as long as I can. The shareholders of Telkom want to see profit, it does not matter how it is achieved.
IF we ever get true competition in SA, as has been promised to us, with LLU and open access to SAT3 implimented, I truly think that Telkom's demise is imminent 
That said it will only happen if there is TRUE competition in the telco market. I think Telkom is aware of this, or at least becoming aware of this, hence their keen interest in other IT type companies to "diversify" there revenue streams. At the moment all they have is ripping SA off to keep their stock holders happy and keep profits sky high. They will never do anything to change this until it is too little too late. They have consistantly shown a lack of vision in the customer centric part of business and clearly are trailing the rest of the world by miles when it comes to keeping up with technology, all in the name of profit. Rather sell over priced diginet lines than over priced DSL lines at higher profits, sack your workforce to save on expenditure, inspite of service delivery. Na there is no vision at Telkom and surely no will to be the best they can be. Yes Telkom is holding the development of broadband back, with the blessing of ICASA and govment, IMO...

I think Telkom missed out on ADSL and is likely gonna pay big time for it if Neotel is more intent on rapid expansion and can offer services for cheaper.. I mean DSL services makes e.g. 64k leased lines look silly.
btw broadband over powerlines is a type of dsl service too i just hope LLU + sat3 gets free'd. Anyone know if its confirmed yet on whats happening in april? when sat3 license is up? *looks nervously at Ivy*

They will and it will show its face round about March next year when competition comes up. They are just milking the last few months before that.
Agree, think Telkom will start hopping around when Neotel launch something substantial but I don't think Neotel will make a big impact in the beginning but at least they may wake Telkom from its slumber. I don't know what those chaps are doing over there as I haven't heard of anything happening lately besides the fact that they have lost a huge court case.
You know what really worries me.Is that we get all excited about the competiton coming next year,and then Neotel realise that they can also squeeze the blood out of the stone and make a killing if they only slightly drop the pricing instead of dropping it as much as everybody hopes they do..And then we back at square one.I really don't think one person giving telkom a run for their money is gonna make to much of a difference,but i guess it is a start.
So why are people stil asking then? they should be asking how can we (aka cash cow) force telscum to change?

What's holding broadband back? The government, in its various forms as the DOC and ICASA. ICASA's independence is a joke. Telkom only acts the way they do and charges what they do because they can, due to the government-sponsored framework they operate in. Telkom's operating like a capitalistic company, and you can't in the end really blame them for it, as bad as it may be, because you can't expect companies to regulate themselves. That's what the elected government and regulators are for.
IMO guavamint in the embodiment of the Grim Poisonous Ivyness Creeper, is mostly to blame for not only holding back broadband in SA, but also for denying most citizens access to a basic [fixed & connected] telephone line in their homes.
Ivy has simplemindedly managed this glorious achievement through her "managed liberalisation" policy which actively protects Telkodemonopolies and prevents competition in the telecoms sector, and competition is what is sorely needed to cause prices to plummet and services to improve and spread further to more citizens of the entire country.
Telkodemonopolies is also to blame, but just think of where this country could have been now if Ivy had not been so keen to protect Telkodemonopolies all this time.
