What is the best anti-virus program?

Our company runs on Macs. We had issues of continual processor usage and dreaded "beachballs". Our IT department suggested it might be malware or a Virus, so they installed BitDefender on our Macs.

Although Macs might be less prone to viruses, there are viruses around...


AVG (free) seems to do a pretty good job on my home PC...

LOLz... Been a while, but the last time I checked there were something like 26 out of 70000 know threats that affect Macs. That trojan story you link to is worse for me 'cos the trojan itself came in the form of an Adobe update and you know what Steve said 'bout Adobe... ;)
Seriously, AVG is good and if you're on a Mac, have a look at Sophos (also free) 'cos the day will come eventually... Just saying

MS can't afford another monopoly lawsuit for putting paid or apps out of business. Besides nobody would take the results seriously if one app scored 100%

It is a bit daft to omit MSE from that list.
 
I do not think there is any "best"

Have installed Kaspersky in client's machines to find that the one running Avast free version picks up infections that Kaspersky misses. Same with AVG and Norton. In this case "you get what you pay for" does not seem to apply. Have used Bit Defender also. Then uninstalled it, replaced it with Avast, did a scan and 4 more infected files found.

You must also run a SpyBot program too, like Search and Destroy, or its like leaving the side door wide open...
 
Well, I use Eset. Surprised to see it did so badly.

The inverse of your post happened to me. We had Bitdefender on our Corporate network, Malware everywhere. Switched to Kaspersky, Malware gone.

I hate Avast with a passion. Pand Cloud removed nasties from systems I have repaired that Avast just overlooked. So the point stands. There isn't one perfect AV.
 
Nice Copy pasta post from AV-Comparatives. If you are genuinely interested you would read the full AV-Comparatives reports. They, and I cannot stress this enough, RECOMEND certain AV's based on level playing field metrics such as false positives, performance, detection rate and 0-day protection.

Therefore they give AVs ratings and recomend certain products, nothing more. Appointing a "best" is pointless.

In any case, Linux, Windows or Mac. You are only as safe as your users are smart and AV's rarely protect you against 0-day exploits.
 
I see the free version of Avast was not the one being tested, but I'm very happy with it after a couple of years of use
 
Don't think there is much difference between free Avast and paid. The paid version gives you some extras, but the basic protection is the same. Agree with teraside above, and it all depends on which websites you visit and how careless people sending you emails are. Had a virus once accompanying a Cape Town Council rates invoice. Called them up straight away and they knew about it and apologised. Said it had just "crept in".
 
my decision on which AV to install depends on how much overhead it will use from my resources--hate it when AV is using most of resources, takes time to boot up, and hogs CPU all the time..in this respect, AVIRA fits the bill between heuristics, performance and easy on the systems resources.

I have just downloaded BitDefender Free now to test--if it takes Windows to boot up more than Windows 7 does on my current setup with AVIRA--it is out.

tried a few AV's in the past before switching to MSE. Best move I ever made. Its also picked up viruses that work/client AV's have not. Have yet to experience the inverse.
Biggest plus about it imo (and other AV's need to learn from this) - you never even know its there.

It will Bitdefender is quite heavy on resources.
 
I always suspected that notorn is no longer doing its job effectively despite its popularity,most of the the time it failed to upgrade and hogged my system,I'm glad I switched to bitdefender
