What is the best anti-virus program?

Haven't had a virus program, ever, running on my Mac. Since 1994. Number of viruses in that time? Zero. Try that on Windows.
Is it just anecdotal evidence? Yes. Is it persuasive anecdotal evidence? Yes.
 
Bitdefender 2012 was quite heavy on resources, but now the 2013 is very light.

Also has a boot to linux to scan for virusses.

Am so far very impressed, and have not noticed speed issues compared to no antivirus, other than when inserting CD/USB, scans them in the background and makes them slow. Can stop the process though.
 
The problem is with most of those in the list is that they are not build for corporates. They do not have the proper distribution mechanisms for keeps thousands of pc up to date while not killing wans. There are only about 4 or 5 out of that list are even worth considering.

For home users and sohos they are fine.

Maybe you should read this article before you become too complacent.

I'm using Avast on my machines with weekly Malwarebytes scans.

+1 at least it doesn't nag me to re-subscribe or leave me unprotected once a year.
I couple it with the virustotal shell extension for scanning known potential threats.

Not to mention horrendous admin nightmares to keep licenses up to date.
 
MSE and ESET Nod 32 is the best protection you can get - but no (decent) firewall.

Bitdefender is the best money can buy, but it is a bit overboard (Imagine Fort Knox in Nazi Germany kind of overboard) for normal users.
 
I use MSE and Comodo Firewall. Best stuff and it's absolutely free! Also using Comodo Mobile Security on my Android phone. Bloody awesome.

For PC/laptop protection, MSE > all the rest. But yes, ESET is good as well but a bit heavy on resources. MSE is so light on juice and works bloody well. I occasionally run MalwareBytes AntiMalware as well just to be safe.

You are refering to Eset Anti-virus, Eset Smart Security comes with a very powerful firewall.

Slightly off topic...

How about Malwarebytes ? I use that for on demand scans coupled with Eset Smart Security which is my overall security suite.
 
Jah, just tested bitdefender--flippen things just takes so long to boot, asking to register, and forcing me to reboot. I am uninstalling. Avira--no such crap. MSE works fine too.

The nicest part about Bitdefender is after you remove/uninstall it, you still have driver hooks and directories left over. Just use Autoruns to check.

It's such a bloody good AV that it never wants to be completely gone from your system (sarcasm*).
 
I think MSE is the best. I use AVG Free for internet security & MSE for my OS security
 
After reading the wiki page for MSE its exclusion puzzles me even more.

I usually use info from AV Comparatives when deciding to buy an anti virus.

When I bought Avira back in 2010, it was basically the best value for money. Cheaper than the others and it was rated Advanced+... It wasn't the best anti virus, but it was close behind. It seems though that Avira has since been downgraded to Advanced.

MSE results are available in the individual reports on their website.
 
Been using MSE for ages and haven't had a single problem.
I haven't installed any security stuff on W8 either.
