Doesn't really have anything to do with their mythical ease of use.

I really didn't think the switch from Windows to Mac was difficult at all, but hey, that's just me. Remember, on a Mac you can also run MS apps like Word and Excel and that makes the change a lot easier... also Macs can, in fact, run Windows... Don't remember Windows being like that... Just saying.

And a PC can run OS X. Not perhaps quite as easily, but neither option is for the non-technical.

Why would you want to run anything other than Word and Excel? But the Mac versions are quite different to their PC counterparts, so in many respects it is like learning a whole new application.

Switching from a Mac to Windows is also easy. Either way is easy for a computer knowledgable person.

In fact I'll add that you can hardly use something as trivial as a music player as an example.
 
Well I've been hackintoshing for a long time, and I consider myself quite computer-knowledgable, and I say it's hard to switch from Windows to OS X! There were a lot of new things for me to learn, and you have to go look at hints online etc to learn everything.

Also, although OS X runs perfectly on a PC, nothing compares to the build quality of Macs, maybe you had some bad experience with one. For example, all the Macs are completely silent, the quietest computers ever!
 
Because they know their market extremely well. They know how to market to your average joe who doesnt understand technology and doesnt want to understand it. They make it simple, and beautiful, they limit it so that you cant really damage it. By constraining themselves so much, they can make good quality products.

Nevertheless, while I can understand their appeal to the masses, they will never appeal to me.
 
Jobs probably tapped into the market that only buys expensive,unique products like Louis Vitton,Rolex etc.
This market is growing (rich getting richer)and doesn't necessarily apply to to a particular age group.
Their ipads,ipods,iphones are the same as everyone else,it just looks different.
You'll soon get minimacbooks and microipods.

I'm not sure I agree with that... Like Eddie Izzard says, I have Techno-Joy and I'd hate to think I was "your average joe". Ran Windows machines for years, Hackintoshed for a year or so and then got my Mac. It's simple and beautiful yes, but I think you'd be amazed by what you can do on it when you start using the Terminal, System Profiler and so on... Also, does Mac really appeal to the masses? The vast majority of machines out there run Windows so the way I see it, the average joe is still buying a Windows machine... Traditionally more specialised users have opted for Mac... Just saying.

I suppose I agree with the last part 'tho I think there is quite a difference between simply running Boot Camp or Parallels and setting up a Hackintosh.
The biggest difference between Word/Excel and Pages/Numbers for me was learning to use the Inspector... Soon as I had that I left Office behind me for ever.
 
Talking about iWork ... I use it on my iPad now all the time. iPad + Keynote + VGA connector = absolute joy to use for presentations (of which I do many). One can rid oneself of MS Office if the will is there to do so. In the corporate environment it is not 100% possible as many report must be in a specific Word format ... but I sure try to do as much on iPad as I can these days.
