I currently have a MSI MB and i5-2500k CPU.

The lan port no longer works and I thought instead of adding a pcie card maybe look at options on the MB and CPU if I can change it for cheap enough. I don't do much intensive work (video processing) really, but still like a quick pc.

What is a good bang for the buck combo to look at currently?

You'll need to change MB, CPU AND Ram all at the same time. So it'll cost a few pennies.

I would wait a month or so for new ryzen stuff to be released.

Been using ryzen 1800x for a while, working without any troubles! Upgraded from a 4770k.

+1 for wait.

Wait for the release of the B360, and H310 chipsets. The i3-8100 is only R1900 and full quad core cpu.

Thanks for the replies.

I will wait and do some more homework in the meantime and continue with the wifi dongle

It won't be for cheap: CPU+mobo+RAM, so maybe consider adding 1Gbps LAN card and optionally SSD.

Disable not working LAN adapter in the BIOS, it may block SMB and confuse spying operation of Intel ME.

Thanks for the headsup
