You'd have hope, not expectation. Your general tone gives an air of expectation that the players will go out and score 3+ goals when they have been unable to trouble the goalkeeper except for that lovely goal in the first game. I also hope they will progress, but I don't have any expectations of that event actually happening.

One more thing though... you'd let your son run in a 100m race while wearing a cast? I mean seriously... /shakes head
 
Nothing is impossible when it comes to football or any sport for that matter lads, nothing.

Actually, I get it I think. For a lot of people being negative as hell just means that they cannot be disappointed. Which is a bit silly as they are already disappointed :) I'd rather delay my disappointment until the final whistle.

Or we accept the the disappointment right when it happens and move on. Delaying disapointment means you will still be just as disappointed when the others are still over it. But clinging to lost hope could just set you up to be ripped a new one when it does go wrong. From where I'm standing you are betting on the worse odds in the world just to turn around to say "I TOLD YOU SO" in the 1 in a 100 chance that you might be right. So 99/100 times you get told "I TOLD YOU SO" you just want to do the same to someone else, even if it only happens once every 100 time ;)

But I'm actually hoping next week you get to tell me "I TOLD YOU SO!" I just don't want to get my hopes up.

I have a hope and an expectation that we can do it. I cannot fathom (which probably explains why some people's opinions on here seem so alien to me) how one would watch their team play a game with the expectation that they are going to lose? And these people call themselves realists? Surely, surely, surely that has to be the perfect definition of a pessimist?!?

I won't watch it because I know that in the end it will be fruitless ;)
 
And that fact that a lot of you are so desperate in your attempts to squash our hope and expectations actually say a lot about you as individuals.......


We brought sons into it earlier but I can only hope this attitude does not extend to your family lives. "No, you can't do that, you will just fail".

No, pessimism would be saying that we will lose. I think they won't go through but I hope and even think they might sneak a win. However... realistically looking at it - the French are more capable than us in doing that.

I think we are in with a chance here guys, I mean France qualified by virtue of a handball and haven't scored a goal in this competition yet with one of their key midfielders out for the match against SA and also clearly have disharmony within their team. Lets get behind our boys.

And in this instance where someone has hope and expectation and you squash it. What do you hope to achieve? Drag everyone down to your pessimistic level?

I'll tell everyone I know about the chance we still have. Why not share a little bit of hope? Surely that is a more healthy outlook?

Well let's be honest, if I know for a fact my kids can't do something. I won't hold them back from doing something they really want to do but I'll incourage them to rather do something they are good at. I mean being a loser all the time would have a negative impact on them growing up. I would rather have them winning at marbles all the time than losing at Rugby all the time. Get what I'm saying?

I do have hope that we'll win, but not that we'll go through.

However - the firs thing has nothing to do with pessimism, optimism or dragging people down/dashing hope etc. It's got to do with a stupid example being used and shot down. I mean letting a child run a 100m race with a cast on. You might think it's clever, but then again it wouldn't be the first time your logic has been flawed.

What would need to happen for France to go through? Too sleepy to do the math.

I hope they don't go through...but what scenario would generate the sickening prospect of France making the final 16?

Dont now about you bro, but no matter how hard SA may suck at footie, the minute they put that Jersey on they have my full support.

What is wrong with wanting your kids to be successful in something rather than fail bad and keep making themself look stupid?. Like I said, I will allow them to do what ever they want, but will nudge them in the way of something they are good at. And I have 4 kids :o
