I was wondering what VM clients people are using at the moment.
I have been using Virtualbox and the only issue i have found i really high CPU usage.
Other than that does anyone have expreience with VMWare or Parallels

VMWare Fusion 3.1. It works well, can even play some games on it.

just went on mybb to ask exactly the same question because at the moment I am using parallels 5 and although I find it extremely impressive it is an overkill for that one little windows program that I am running with it. If you have other windows software you need then go for Parallels. It has won every single comparison test in terms of speed and graphics rendering.

just google vmware vs parallels and you will soon be convinced.

back to my question. what vm could I use for this one little windows program? I tried wine something and it utterly sucks.

I use virtualbox. Its free and its not that bad.
Thanks for the Parallels advice. I will look into it.

I've used both - I find parallels a little obtrusive but by tweaking the settings it seems to work ok. VMware is probably the world leader in virtualisation (vSphere etc) so I'll stick with Fusion.

I use VMWare Fusion, not had any issues with it and I would recommend it - I have some particular processing requirements which mandate that I use VMWare.

If you have a need to run just 1 Windows application, then your best bet is VirtualBox, that main advantage of which is that it is free.

Look i have used Virtualbos (mainly due to it being free) i am going to try a trial of the other two and see whats better. My only hassle is virtualbox is the hight CPU usage

Just downloaded fusion 3.1 which is apparently much faster than 3.0, installed win xp pro sp3 and I have to admit the speed is very impressive. I have totally changed my opinion about vmware fusion after trying 3.1.

I use Fusion 3.1 and it's brilliant.

hey all.

i need to run .vhd files. i have tried virtualbox and fusion. and all i get is errors while importing it. any idea on how i can fix the problem?

i got given everything in vhd, its for the IT courses i am doing

I suggest you try vmware converter, and whatever error message you get, type into google, followed by site:communities.vmware.com

That should help you. If all else fails, you'll have to open the VM in Virtual PC under Windows, get out the stuff you want and manually move it over, that's a schlep let's hope it doesn't come to that.

thanks a lot for the help. busy converting atm. *holding thumbs*

Virtualbox does open VHDs, unless those VHDs were created with Hyper-V as Hyper-V seems to create VHDs with a different format.

I use Parallels 5 Desktop to run Windows 7 (need Office 2007 for compatibility with my clients, and also use LiveScrive Desktop, no Mac version). When working I have an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro, so run Windows 7 in Windowed Mode on the external monitor, and obviously Mac OSX on the laptop windows. Works great. I allocate 2GB + 2GB to each OS.
