What was your first car

1980 Toyota Corolla
1.8 GLS Sprinter
Rear while drive fun
Silver in color with black stripes.. miss that car.

Oh, is this for the first one bought with own money thread?

My first car was also the first car I bought with my own money. Finished matric, got a holiday job, took six weeks of pay and bought a 1971 Ford Escort 1100 (two door) for R400. Seriously underpowered. A year later I had three different engines, two gearboxes and a spare body. But it was still pap :)

What I got from that mainly is that your are like my father's age...

Ah the good ole days of varsity.. that 27l tank meant driving for 1.5 months in Cpt

I did a project in Mechanical Engineering on the Wankel Rotary Engine.
Had the opportunity actually put one of those through a full set of bench tests in the Mech Eng Lab at UCT ...

I wonder what happen if modern materials were used to make one today --- how it would fare. Thought at the time it was best thing since sliced bread.

PS brilliant piece of work fooling the MyBB censor! :D

Watched an interesting video(s) on this yesterday actually showing the pros and cons of the engine design, if you're interested I suggest you have a watch:

GoTekEnergy in California has reinvented the rotary engine. What it calls a DynaKinetic design does away with some of the Wankel shortcomings.

It changes the pinched-oval housing and triangular rotor (as used in the Mazda) to a circular housing and a 4-star rotor that has four combustion chambers.

Cool, I'll add this to my watch later. I'm not a big motor head but I love learning how the engineering behind it works.

beetle 1600, think it was a '73 or thereabouts...had the newer style taillights
drank petrol quicker than i could pour it in
Remember, it comes from the days when petrol was <R0.08 a litre. No-one cared about fuel consumption. Reliability was a much bigger issue - could it travel for more than 3 hours at 70 mph? The air-cooled VeeDub could.
