My First car was a Golf 1 GTS

My first car was a 1981 VW Golf 1.6 GTS which I got for R 6,500 in November 1982 with 30,000 kms on the clock. I sold my 1981 Honda XR 500R Prolink for R 2,000 and used that as the deposit on it.

It was an AWESOME car to drive, especially going around corners with the inside rear wheel off the ground! My first set of front tyres only lasted 20,000 kms, lots of robot to robot dices! Upgrading the front shocks to GTI specs and fitting 185/70HR13 tyres meant it had virtually the same handling as a Golf GTI on the twisty bits as well.

Unfortunately an errant motorist that jumped a kerb in front of me whilst I was driving @ 60 km/h killed my GTS in Sept 1983 with just over 90,000 kms on the clock, about 4 hours after I got it back from the agents after having it serviced!

I went back to motorcycles after that and got a 1984 Yamaha XT600Z Tenere from a friend in 1987, which I sold in 1992 when I moved up to JHB for a year, as you could not ride a motorcycle on some freeways up here due to the expansion gaps!

My next car I had for a while was a 1991 E30 series BMW 325i Auto, which I had on semi-permanent loan from a friend from 2008 to 2010. It was GREAT to drive in town except for the humongous thirst for petrol (about 16-18 l/100 kms in town and about 10-11 l/100 kms on the open road.)

When I moved up to JHB at the end of 2010 I was glad to give it back, as it was starting to make a BIG dent in my wallet when filling it up each time!

I got a 2005 Tata Indica 1.4 LSi in Feb 2011 with 57,000 kms on the clock (including a full service plan) for R 45,000 (new they go for R 100,000) and so far, with 81,000 kms on the clock, the only things I have had to replace are a set of front brake pads, 2 front fog light globes and a battery - total cost just over R1,000 or so.

People may ridicule and disparage a Tata, but so far I have had no problems with it at all, and it returns about 8 l/100 kms in a mix of city and urban driving, giving me about 400 kms from 32 litres (it only has a 37 litre tank.)

first was a 1994 Ford Telstar 2.0 GLE... lots of good memories... this was followed by a 1998 BMW 328i (E36) which I still use as a spare car, since I bought my Mini Cooper S (R56) last year...
 
1974 Datsun 1200 Bakkie R1,760.00 cash including tonneau cover! Should never have gotten rid of it …..
 
2006 Citroen C2 1.4vtr... Bought it second hand when I finished varsity, still going strong. I love the car but the after sales service sucks! Planning to keep it another 2 maybe 3 years before I trade up.

Drove it for half a year when it didn't pass roadworthy anymore (In the Netherlands cars must go for roadworthy every year already since the 80's)

My first car as well; the green one. :p I got mine second hand and since then I've always bought hatchbacks! The rear wheel drive was also a pleasure and self-servicing was a breeze.
 
First car was an Uno Fire iirc.....

Thing was a beaut until it decided a citigolf pizza delivery vehicle was unacceptable and drove into the citigolf and wrote itself and the golf off...

Did you all have insurance? Did you pay off a lot?

No Insurance...

Car was only worth R10k at the time... So I just missioned off an bought a Ford Laser and got insurance...
 
Jeep CJ5 replica fiberglass body on a 1.6L VW Beetle rolling chassis. Going to rebuild with a shortened Hilux rolling chassis, using the Beetle bits 'n peices to make a dune buggy.
 
My first car was Daewoo, I think it was a Matiz. It was old and had no PS, AC, or anything.
I bought it for about R20k in 2006, it was 3rd hand but in good condition.

I had it for 2 months before a lady made an illegal u-turn across the road at night without indicating and I T-boned her.
That was the end of my attempt to be a car person. I went right back to motorbikes and, even thought I do own a car, it stands in the driveway unused and unwanted while I commute everywhere with my bike all the time. I love my bike.

If anybody asked I told them "Coupe is Italian for Fast Car." My old man got it for me for R700 and this was only in 1992. He got it off somebody in Jhb who had had it covered with a tarp and his cats had been sleeping in it. We dropped a new battery in it, started up on the third attempt and drove it down to Maritzburg via the nearest petrol station. The thing drove like a dream and that after having not even been started in around 8 years. They don't make cars like that anymore.
 
Mine was a '81 VW Jetta GLS and cost R9000 if I recall correctly. Twenty years later and I still have the car, it has help me out on many occasions when my "modern" daily driver left me stranded.
 
my first car was a 'restored' 1968-1972 Mini 1100: British Racing gree, white roof, authentic hub caps and chrome trim. Got it for R18k as my first car for varsity. I used to drive between Stellenbosch and Hermanus (100km) quite regularly and always at the speed limit with no hassles...... until the generator burnt out while driving to Hermanus in a crazy downpour, luckily the battery was new and kept me , my lights and intermittent windscreen wiper usage alive until I got to Hermanus. Then the engine block decided to crack one day when the water pump broke, so my Dad got hold of a donor 1275cc donor car, bored out the engine to 1350cc, racing cams and better clutchs, swapped out the engine and boy did she drive well!!

Later the CV joints started to make clicking sounds when turning at full lock. So on the day I am driving to the workshop to have it checked out, I turn a corner and suddenly a loud KLaNK and the car does a 180 and I land on the pavement. Basically the CV snapped, locked the right drive shaft and sent all the power to the left wheel and thus spun the car around..... lots of fun I had.... :D

I eventually "upgraded" to a Fiat Uno 1100 and the mini stayed inmy parents garage for 3 years until one day I went home and my mom had sneakily swapped it for a years worth of garden services..... I was not a happy chappy!!
