Im looking at getting into graphic designing, for logos and banners and stuff like that.
I was wondering whats the best software to use for doing this kind of work?

Thanks in advance

Photoshop

Illustrator

Google Images + Photoshop (or GIMP) + Talent (As it's a flooded market) + A Contacts Bank... hmmm. Think that's it.

...oh, and a decent 3D application will be needed. (Maya might be a bit overkill)

Where would you recommend I buy photosop Bwana(Read where is the cheapest place i can get it!). Apparantly you cant live without it

Try GIMP (FREE) for starters, as your skill grows you can decide if it's worth while to pay that ENOURMUS amount for photoshop.

3D:
Maya > 3dsMax > Lightwave > Everything else

2D Editing:
Photoshop > Paint Shop Pro > Gimp > Everything else

Vecor:
Illustrator > CorelDRAW > Everything else

Blue > What I use - not the best of the best, but also not as difficult. it can do the same as the top of the line, if you know ur stuff.

I have been using paintshop pro but I was only using it because my brother got it for free. Never tried GIMP before but the thing is i want to make high quality designs. Like the banners you see here on myBB. Is this possible with GIMP?

Ah...well, as I sit here in my Graphics design job, I can honestly say that you just need talent - doesn't matter what you use really... ive seen people do better stuff in PAINT than I can do with CorelDRAW (search "mona lisa paint" in youtube)

GIMP can do most things that Photoshop can. And there are tutorials available. I'm building an A1 size map on it (to print on A0 posters), and it seems to work okay.

The only difference that I've found so far is that Photoshop's super-advanced features are better (To be expected), but I've never used them. I really think GIMP is a great starting platform. It supports layers and masks and the works... and lets not forget, it's opensource, so if you find that it lacks somewhere you can submit your suggestion.

Best if you check from their site if it will suite your need...

Vector: Illustrator
3D: Cinema4D (Easy to learn, great results)
Indesign: for Brochures and Documents

And of course Photoshop, and talent, or at least experience.

yes, gimp can do most of the things photoshop can... but it just isn't photoshop

Gimp and inkscape are great, Photoshop is becoming redundant for decent graphics now.

I know... and I still miss photoshop. BUT Gimp is FREE. :D
So, it makes a good starting platform for a business. If he makes enough money with Graphic Design... by all means get Photoshop.

(I had to press (Shift + Delete, Y) on all my illegal copies as my work will be used for profit soon, and if i then used an illegal program... it would be copyright breach.)

(Yes, you can own "illegal" copied software like photoshop and Maya. You are not allowed to use the products you create with them for profit of any sort)

i think a lot people probably own "illegal" copies but it's hard to find somebody who's willing to help you out:)
If you now what i mean.

I wont be going into graphic design for a living though, just need to design banners and logo's really so spending so much money of the software will not be worth it.
*off to go play with GIMP*

+1

I'm not much of an Adobe CS aficionado, but apparently the new Corel Suite (X4) has an option to "emulate" the look-and-feel of CS3. That's great for converting Adobies to Corel...

Paintshop Pro has been servicing my website graphic needs for a few years now, seeing as the files are pretty small. Also, for 3D models I use 3D Studio Max - a bit of a learning curve, but the results are very satisfying. I'd say if you work through all the tutorials you'd be able to make some nice-looking models in no time.

In the ideal world, everyone would have money to buy Adobe products. Unfortunately, up-and-coming designers should start with (legit) cheaper software, like Paintshop Pro (approx. R800), or move to Corel Graphics Suite (around R4000 for the whole suite, including DRAW and PhotoPaint).

And if You wanna go extreme and do some professional 3D Sculpting, maybe look at something like Z-Brush, Mudbox or Silo.

but that's only if you wanna go that far...LOL
