This is the second time it has happened in a week.

Machine was very hot to the touch

Switched off and on and it was fine.

It's a 3 month old rMBP 13 inch

That's the symbol for when the OS or SSD is not detected. Not a good sign. I suggest you take the machine in to Core or the nearest iStore since it's still under warranty.

But it resolves...what do I tell them exactly?
And the tech guys at the Istore are not the sharpest tool in the shed. Will probably keep it and then send it back saying nothing is wrong

The only thing I noted was the lid on one occasion was not closed properly...u think it matters?

I think backup your data at the first chance.

Then worry about getting it repaired.

I agree. Backup up everything first, then to make sure that the iStore schmucks understand the problem, make a quick video of the error when it happens again. That's what I did when I had a screen corruption problem with my iPad 3.

The lid does not make a difference. Either way, you must take it in for a warranty claim. There is definitely something wrong with it.

Thanks.

Still new to Mac. Do I backup with time machine or another method?
What if they swop me with another machine?

Is there a log I can access to see what happened prior to the crash?

Thanks.

Use Time Machine and backup to an external drive. If they give you a new machine, then boot from the external drive and restore. The new machine will then be identical to the old one.

Thanks.

time machine is an option
personally, i would (and have) create a clone of the drive.

having a cloned drive, if you have a serious problem & the laptop will not boot, you are able to boot the laptop from the cloned drive & rectify any problems.

have you run "disk utility" (applications > utilities > disk utility) to check the drive ?
another option to "disk utility" is disk warrior from Alsoft.

Gone to disk utility but how do you "check" the drive?

Also how do U clone the drive?

this is from an old macbook pro of mine - but it still applies:
disk utility.jpg

1) select the partition containing the mac os (in mine you will see 2 partitions, mac & windows)
2) select first aid
3) click repair permissions.

once complete
4) click verify disk

It's a mac. It has detected that it is more than a week old. It now wants you to buy a new one.

Just add to above, it is critical: don't do any testing, backup first. If any problems during backup, power off, remove battery, reseat SSD to clean contacts and try again.

So you can remove the battery and ssd of a 2013 rMBP?
Divine intervention?

Good luck finding a pentalobe screwdriver for a rMBP, or at least one that won't break before you get all the screws out.

Start it up and reselect the startup disk in System Prefs.

go here:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/app...na-display-13-how-to-upgrade-ssd-storage.html
& scroll down the page to: "Upgrade Instructions (Late 2012 & Early 2013 Models)"
this will show you how to open the mbp

**as mentioned above - make sure you have the CORRECT screwdriver (Torx -T6). dont even think of using anything else!

did you run disk utility ?

Well let's get back on track here. Seems to have derailed.

It's a 3 MONTH old rMBP (hence late 2013) and hence STILL under warranty.
