Hey guys,

I signed up with Axxess uncapped express 512k two days ago, because they advertised that it was an unshaped service.

I soon found that it was in fact not an unshaped service when I started a download, to see it was capped at 20kb/s.

I phoned in to complain, and the nice guy who I spoke to told me I was a four star and should not be shaped. He said he would need to call IS and find out. I asked him where I can read about the stars, he said I cant because something something.

So now I'm pretty disappointed. Firstly I have the understanding that mweb allows you to download more per month, compared to IS. The upside was that IS is unshaped and fast all the time (which was clearly a lie). So I'm back at square one.

I'd like to hear objective and unbias reviews (small, but sweet :)) from you guys regarding the two. I'm not planning on downloading heavily. 50gigs a month is perfect for me. I will probably never go any higher than that.

My main concern is the difference in shaping. Which one offers faster torrent speeds during the day and during the night? I dont leave my PC on during the night, so "off-peak" speeds are not really a big fuss for me. I would prefer to have speed when I want it, which for me would be while I'm awake.

I would be really grateful if some of you would please inform me of what speeds I can expect during the day from mweb and motivate why I should move to them, or why I shouldn't?

Thanks!

When 20 gigs is classified by the ISP's as a lot, abuse, etc. LOL

I am with MWEB and I get full speeds after hours and weekends. During business hours, my torrests clock out at below 10-20 KB/s which is fine as they shape that to avoid impacting the network badly during office hours. Apart from SEACOM issues earlier, there have been very little issues with them. We do about 70-90Gb a month and no shaping or moaning occurs. I would still recommend MWEB for good HONEST uncapped...

I'm sorry but i have to say this... Internet services in SA suck big time, and they are damn expensive. I am having the exact same issue with Afrihost and all i get are excuses from them.

At the end of the day it looks like the only way to get completly unshaped lines is to pay alot more for it. I think mweb offers and uncaped unshaped line for R700 or R800 a month. Overseas they have 30MB lines and get downloads speeds that will make your stomach turn inside out. AND it's at an affordable cost.

Anyway i will follow this thread as i am also curious to know if there is a product out there that is fairly reasonable. Right now i feel anything is better than Afrihost.

You cannot compare. Mweb is superfast in relation. Also Mweb is the only guys upgrading capacity. Where's the rest? I will choose Mweb any day!

Can you browse other sites at decent speeds while doing torrents? At 20kbs you're getting a hd movie worth of data during normal hours per day.Thats not too bad

Yes. Browsing is full speed and torrents are unshaped at 20kb/s... (according to Axxess's definition of unshaped).

When I hit the top 20%, I'll be shaped to gprs.

Mweb is a decent uncapped service that you get okay speeds on. Internet Solutions uncapped is a money making extortion scheme. In a civilized country you would be able to sue IS for such a crappy product.

Why? Because of how early they cap (shape) you?

in a civilized country they'd go bust!

Co-Sign word for word.

This whole week I have been getting between 6 and 8KB down from International on the 384kB Uncapped/Shaped R196 account.
Should be getting in the 30's, like i do for local.
That have flat out throttled my international.
Even now at half past midnight I get 6KB/s when trying to save a 35MB .avi file off a car site.

Update:

F@k me. Do you know how slow that speedtest was to watch.
IS have have cocked up a once okish product.
I must be in that top20%. What a crock of shyte.
Trying to save a few pics off skins.be is painful and I can't open 2 at once without them both timing out.

Yeah I think it was due to that IS problem with their IP connect thingy. I was getting slow speeds even on my 10gig IS account.

Yup - same here. I'm getting 0.05 down. I queried this and was told that I'm part of the 20%. I've given up trying to use the internet at this rate. I shall be submitting my 1 calendar months notice, and looking elsewhere in the meantime....

Its taken me now almost three days to download a 1.2gig file (and I'm not even part of the 20% - I've still got "Full Access")

If you are with axxess, you can cancel your account without the 1 month notice as long as you do it before the 26th or something like that.

Well im on IS

38gb down...

I like this account.. :)

+1

I'm also on Openweb Gold IS, just the 4Meg and it isn't working less than I ever expected. Torrents suck during the day just like on all the uncapped accounts but that's a given but otherwise the http speed is fine during the day. I think you're gonna have trouble to get a reasonably priced uncapped account with torrents running great during the day. So I would say your only choices would be Openweb Gold or Mweb. With Mweb being the cheaper one.

Yeah, I'll be going with mweb. The whole point of uncapped is not having to worry about being capped. The IS uncapped accounts shape you to the point where you pretty much are capped after only downloading something like 12gigs. With so many heavy downloaders @ mweb, I wont even be noticed.
