Whatsapp Alternative

What about this - WhatsApp’s biggest competitor is Line, a messaging app that lets users send text messages, images, video and audio, was well as make phone calls over the internet or video conference.

The Line messaging app is available for almost every computer and mobile platform, including Windows, OS X, the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Nokia’s Asha and even Firefox OS.

Line has 350 million users globally, expanding rapidly from 10 million in December 2011 according to data from Statista. Line Corporation is headquartered in Japan, a subsidiary of South Korea’s online content and search company Naver Corporation.

Screenshots?

They added optional encryption in October. It looks like another close-source project.
It is interesting how they are planning to implement end-to-end encryption on multilple registered devices.
But Line plans to switch it on by default for all users soon, initially it is only default for those with one Android device registered to their account. There are plans to add encrypted sealing to Line for desktop and other operating systems over time, too.
Telegram do not plan to do it, as it would involve exposing device secret key.

Lots of negative reviews, for both iOS and Android. Lots of complaints of failed notifications, not what you want from a communication app.

Line is 33meg to download, which the OP does not want. He is already complaining about WhatsApp which is too bloated and big to download @ 19meg. Signal is 14.22meg and Telegram is 16.02meg. This is on Android. Not sure if the size is different for other platforms.
